Make War on Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) With Our Trap and Lure

The new Alpha Scents lure for Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) is available to help you fight thrips damage and the spread of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, a tospovirus vectored by WFT.  Combine this lure with our No-mess Blue/Yellow Sticky Card for highly effective monitoring and trapping of both male and female.

Tospovirus caused diseases have been reported in more than 550 plant species in 75 families of economically important field and greenhouse crops in the tropics, subtopics, and temperate climate zones worldwide*.

Seven thrips species have been reported as possible vectors.  The majority become viruliferous in the second larval stage.  However, adults are most efficient at transmitting TSWV and may retain infectivity for life.  TSWV is transported via the salivary ducts**.

Lettuce leaves punctured by WFT may take on a silvery appearance that eventually turns to brown and can become confused with windburn or blown sand damage.  Other foliage damage may include streaking, spotting and tissue distortion.  Veins often look outlined by feeding closely parallel to them.  Egg laying may leave translucent pimples and stippling that can be confused with mite stippling.  Look for the presence of small, black fecal specks in the damaged area to confirm thrips damage.  If you see webbing or shed skins damage may be caused by mites, not thrips***.

Place Alpha Scents No-mess Blue/Yellow Sticky Cards with lures along field edges when temperatures exceed 63°F to monitor for when thrips begin to migrate into the field from adjacent vegetation.  Hang traps with lures above crop rows in field and greenhouses.  Early morning, you can also place a trap (without lure) below plants and beat the plants to collect a representative sample on the sticky card for counting and positive identification.  For this you may prefer to use our larger No-mess Yellow Sticky Card or a White Delta Trap Insert Sticky Card.

Movie Short:  MalEx™ Moth and Droplet Fatal Attraction

Click [HERE] to watch a very short video that shows a Citrus leafminer male moth mating with a MalEx™ droplet.  The full length movie will be showing in our Booth 100 at the Entomology 2010 Show.  It is quite amazing.  You won't want to miss seeing how this combination of pheromone and tiny amount of insecticide can be so effective without damaging the environment.  The movie short is also playing at www.alphascents.com on the home page and in the Jukebox in our Video Library
