RedBeesRed Delta Trap Saves Bees

84 honey bees on insert from white trap3 honey bees on insert from red trapHoney bees seem to prefer the white delta traps over the red ones.  This has been observed over and over again during back yard tests we have been conducting in southern California.  Any time of year the ratio of honey bees landing on the sticky surfaces of our delta traps has averaged 50:2 white vs. red.  During peak periods of bee activity, such as when trees are in blossom, we have seen inserts in white delta traps saturate with honey bees within 24-48 hours while in red delta traps 0 to 5 bees will land over the period of an entire month.

This also affects trap monitoring sensitivity.  Target pest captures were greatly reduced on trap inserts heavily saturated with honey bees compared to inserts with few to no honey bees.

Traps have been deployed in citrus and peach trees in these configurations:  1) one trap per tree, 2) red and white plastic delta traps hung five feet apart, 3) red paper delta trap hung alone in a tree and also in trees with plastic deltas.  Red paper delta trap honey bee capture is typically zero (0).  Alpha Scents Citrus Leafminer and Peach Twig Borer lures were used in the test traps.

Conclusion:

Alpha Scents Red Delta Traps (both plastic and paper) are approximately 97%  less likely to capture honey bees when hung in fruit trees than white traps, especially when trees are in flush and flowering.  Morevoer, captures of target pests attracted by lures in delta traps are more accurate from red delta traps than from white delta traps, especially where honey bees are present.
