Mountlake Terrace Dedicates "Hawk Way"
Snohomish County Councilmember Dave Gossett joined Mountlake Terrace Mayor Jerry Smith, Councilmember Seaun Richards, and hundreds of students and residents to celebrate the naming of "Hawk Way" on Wednesday, September 26th.
Mountlake Terrace High School was built on the current site in the 1960's and rebuilt in the 1990's. The entry way to the high school has always been a numbered road.
"Earlier this year Russ Heagle approached the Mountlake Terrace Council about renaming the road for the Mountlake Terrace mascot, the Hawks," said Gossett. "Mayor Smith and the Council started to work on getting it done."
The ceremony included the student body making a procession behind a truck carrying the Associated Student Body (ASB) officers and a copy of the "Hawk Way" sign. Once the sign arrived at the podium the Mountlake Terrace High School Choir sang the Star Spangled Banner. The national anthem was followed by the Mountlake Terrace High Band playing the school fight song. After a few comments from the podium the crowd counted down from 10 to zero and the sign was unveiled renaming the street to the cheers of onlookers.
"I'm a Mountlake Terrace High School graduate and actually started my political activity there," said Gossett, who was ASB President in the 1968-69 school year. "It was great to see everyone so excited about this recognition of the Mountlake Terrace Hawks."
