Snohomish County To Celebrate

"National Night Out Against Crime"

At Willis Tucker Community Park

Snohomish County, in partnership with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, local police departments and area nonprofits is hosting the annual National Night Out on August 7th at Willis Tucker Park.

National Night Out is an annual national event that is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch as a way to promote citizen involvement in crime and drug prevention activities, strengthen police-community relations and encourage neighborhood camaraderie as part of keeping the community safe.

"Generating support for anti-crime efforts strengthens our communities," said Snohomish County Councilmember Dave Gossett. "National Night Out is a great event for promoting community partnerships and generating understanding of and participation in crime prevention efforts".

National Night Out presents a wonderful opportunity for you to gather with your neighbors, get better acquainted, and talk about issues of common concern.

Local law enforcement will be on hand to discuss crime prevention. Folks will have the chance to learn first-hand how local law enforcement is working to reduce crime and protect families as well as learn steps they can take to increase public safety.

"In addition to being educational National Night Out is just plain fun," added Gossett. "There will be free food, face painting, games and the featured live music by Jette and the Resonators."

The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at Willis Tucker Park, 6705 Puget Park Drive in Snohomish. More than 1,000 people attended last year's National Night Out.

"The celebration at Willis Tucker Park is not the only National Night Out celebration in Snohomish County," noted Gossett. "Many other cities and neighborhoods will be hosting gatherings on August 7th."

Some of the other celebrations include:

District 4 Opening On Planning Commission

The Planning Commission was formed in 1962 to advise the county on planning issues. It is comprised of 11 members, two appointed from each Council district, and one at-large appointment who is recommended by the Executive and may reside anywhere within the county.

The Planning Commission conducts public hearings concerning land use and zoning issues and makes recommendations to the County Council. Their role is to represent the perspective of local citizens in the land use process.

"One of the members from Council District 4 has recently moved and as a result resigned," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "I'm seeking qualified candidates to fill the vacancy."

Snohomish County Code lists desirable qualifications as knowledge of land use theories, growth management, and agricultural preservation; having a minimal potential for conflict of interest; having a demonstrated interest in the welfare of Snohomish County; and providing balance to the countywide representation on the commission.

The requirements for appointment to the Planning Commission are:

  • The nominee be a full-time resident of Snohomish County
  • The nominee not a Snohomish County employee
  • The nominee have sufficient time to attend all scheduled commission meetings

The Planning Commission regularly meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month. In addition there are sometimes special meetings.

"A public hearing is held on all nominations and Planning Commission members must be approved by the Council," said Gossett. "Those interested should contact me at dave.gossett@co.snohomish.wa.us or 425-388-3494 for more information or a nomination form."
