National Night Out Celebration Tuesday, August 2nd

On Tuesday, August 2nd, neighborhoods throughout the County are invited to join in on the annual celebration of "National Night Out".

"Snohomish County cities and citizens have been active in National Night Out for many years," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "In my district events will be held by Snohomish County, Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, and Brier."

National Night Out is an annual nationwide event that is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch as a way to promote citizen involvement in crime and drug prevention activities, strengthen police-community relations, and encourage neighborhood camaraderie as part of keeping the community safe.

This year's Snohomish County sponsored event at McCollum Park gets underway at 5:00 PM. As in years past the county has partnered with local law enforcement and area non-profits to put on the event. Information on the events in Mountlake Terrace, Brier, and Bothell is below.

"Without the work of the volunteers and the local organizations it wouldn't be possible to put these events on," said Gossett. "They are a great chance to meet your neighbors, learn how to keep your family safe, and have some fun."

McCollum Park will feature crime and fire prevention information, a children ID program, family resource booths, live music, activities for children and much more.

The SnoCope Credit Union will be on hand offing free hot dogs and corn-on the-cob and the Mill Creek Lions Club has dessert handled offering free sno-cones.

Council Approves Bid Award for Improvements At Willis Tucker Park

The County Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to award a $1,122,000 million dollar contract to A-1 Landscaping and Construction for the purpose of constructing additional infrastructure and fields at Willis D. Tucker Community Park.

"Once again we received really good bids," said Councilmember Gossett, who noted that the bid came in $200,000 below the estimates. "It's great to be able to provide citizens with needed improvements while saving them money."

The initial ground breaking of the 84 acre park, named after the first county executive, Willis D. Tucker, was on July 30, 2004. That phase of development included two baseball fields, playgrounds, picnic shelters, a community activity center , an amphitheater, parking, landscaping, the Parks Administration building and the necessary support infrastructure including drainage and irrigation. This year the county decided to begin development of the east half of the park.

"Willis Tucker is one of the most popular parks in our system," said Gossett. "It gets a lot of use by families now and these improvements will make it more family-friendly."

Included in the award approved by the Council is the development of a15 acre multi-use playfield as well as expanded parking and walking trails. The continued phased development of this park ensures that this park will be a signature park with many recreational options.

The funding for this contract is a combination of mitigation fees and Real Estate Excise Tax. The project is expected to be completed within 90 calendar days.
