Improvements Planned for 180th

The County Council's Public Works Committee reviewed the Right-of-Way (ROW) plan for 180th this week. Approval of the ROW plan will allow the Department of Public Works to proceed with the purchase of ROW necessary for improvements on 180th St SE from SR527 to 23rd Drive SE.

"180th, which connects Hwy 9 to the Bothell-Everett Highway, is one of the county's major east-west corridors," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "Currently 180th St. SE has three lanes and has outgrown its capacity to move traffic freely."

The purpose of this project is to improve the 3 lane facility on 180th to a 5 lane facility. The much needed improvements will expand the capacity allowing traffic to move with less congestion and delays. Existing gaps in the sidewalk will also be filled.

"Adding capacity for cars is a key part of this project," noted Gossett, "but the project is designed to provide transportation options. The improvements will include sidewalks and bike lanes and provide additional capacity for possible future bus routes."

Public Works intends to apply for federal funding once ROW and design are further along. The department believes the project will be a good candidate for federal funds. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013 and be finished in 2014.

Tambark Creek Park - County Hosting Public Meeting April 13

Snohomish County Parks will host a public meeting related to future plans for Tambark Creek Park on April 13th at 7 p.m. in the county offices at Willis Tucker Park (6705 Puget Park Drive, Snohomish). The purpose is to provide the public with updates on the construction time table and features planned at Tambark Creek Park.

Tambark Creek Park is a 40-acre property southeast of the city of Mill Creek on 35th Ave. SE and north of 180th.

"Prior to being on the Council I was involved in the acquisition of the property," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "I'm very excited that we are going to break ground soon. More active and passive recreation opportunities are desperately needed in this part of the county."

The site was acquired in 1995/1996 through a joint agreement between the city of Mill Creek and Snohomish County. This partnership was created in order to meet the park needs of the local community by providing a facility that would provide active sports fields as well as other park features.

Following acquisition, a Master Planning process was initiated to outline the future use of the site. County and city staff worked together with consultants, the public and a specially formed Citizen Advisory Committee to identify important park components and considerations in planning. The Master Plan that resulted from this process was completed in 1998.

In 2005, funding was allocated for development of the Tambark Creek site through a mitigation agreement with King County for construction of the Brightwater treatment plant.

"Tambark will be a full service park," said Gossett. "Plans include ballfields, a playground, parking, restrooms, trails, and an off-leash dog area."

The project will go to bid in late April or early May. Construction will begin in July. In preparation for construction, final steps are now being completed to secure permits and provide utilities to the site.

This phase will develop the western portion of the park. Future plans include additional restrooms and parking on the eastern portion of the site.
