County Council Moves Forward On Little Bear Creek Preservation

This week the Snohomish County Council approved the purchase of the Paige/Fahrenkopf property along Little Bear Creek.

"Little Bear Creek is a vital part of one of the most important watersheds in south Snohomish County," said Councilmember Dave Gossett.  "Purchases in this watershed preserve open space, enhance water quality, and protect salmon."

In 2005, the Snohomish County Council reached an agreement with King County regarding construction of the Brightwater Wastewater Treatment Facilities in Snohomish County.  A condition of that agreement was that King County agreed to provide Snohomish County $70,000,000 to mitigate the impact of the Brightwater facility on surrounding communities.  Projects included recreational facilities, public safety improvements, habitat mitigation and a Community Resource Center located at the Brightwater facility.

The owners of the property, Raymond and Harland Paige and Geraldine Fahrenkopf, have agreed to sell their property to the County for the 2009 assessed value of $428,500.  Funding will be from the Brightwater mitigation fund.  The site is 10.06 acres.

"Purchasing this 10 acres provides habitat preservation and community access opportunities within a portion of middle Little Bear Creek," noted Gossett.  "With the Paige/Fahrenkopf property the county has preserved a total of 71 acres of vital habitat using Brightwater dollars."

Up to $9,500,000 of the Brightwater funds were available for habitat purchases.  Over $6,000,000 remain for more purchases in the future.

Closing on this property is scheduled for March 15, 2010.

Free H1N1 Vaccine Available

The Snohomish County Health District will offer free H1N1 vaccine at 8 special clinics in February and March.

"We now have enough of the vaccine to offer it to everyone who wants it," said Councilmember Gossett, boardmember of the Snohomish Health District.  "We hope that there will not be a large 'third wave' of H1N1 illness in our community, but offering these special clinics is the best defense if the virus re-emerges in the spring."

People 65 and older are less likely to get H1N1 flu, but those who do are more likely to have complications or get secondary infections like pneumonia.  Since H1N1 vaccine is readily available, seniors are encouraged to get it.  Parents are reminded that children younger than 10 need two doses of vaccine to be fully protected.  Children over 10 need only one dose.  There are still many children who have not been vaccinated against H1N1 at all.

"No appointments are necessary," said Gossett.  "I encourage anyone older than six months to take advantage of this free vaccination."

Mill Creek Restaurant U-Kawa Teriyaki Wins Health District Award for Safe Food Handling

Six Snohomish County food establishments were recognized for excellent food safety practices in a ceremony at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the Snohomish Health District auditorium.

"It's exciting that a restaurant in my district was recognized by the Snohomish Health District," said Councilmember Dave Gossett.  "With over 3,300 food establishments in the county to judge from it's not easy to win an Excellence Award."

Snohomish Health District created the Excellence Awards program in 1989 as a positive reinforcement of its restaurant and food service inspection program.  The public health agency's 10 food facility inspectors work with all food service establishments in the county - from espresso stands and taco wagons to sit-down restaurants with complex menus.  It also monitors food preparation at 25 local fairs and festivals in the summer months.  Each operation must meet strict health standards for sanitation to maintain its permit.

"U-Kawa Teriyaki was chosen by officials as a great establishment to get "fast", great tasting, safe food," commented Gossett.  "I want to congratulate owners Gil and Young Ha for their success and hard work."

A 24-member food advisory panel of industry peers considered 22 food service establishments nominated by health district inspectors.  The panel includes restaurant owners, operators, and chefs.
