"Go Extreme ... Go Evergreen"

The Evergreen State Fair, which opened on Thursday and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 7, is focused this year on the theme "Go Extreme .......Go Evergreen".

"The Evergreen State Fair is a wonderful opportunity for family fun," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "With rides, exhibits, animals, entertainment, and great food there is something for everyone."

Although there are many interesting things to see and do at the fair the primary emphasis is always agriculture. Snohomish County honored Macomber Farms this year for 100 years of continued agricultural production.  Family members were recognized during the opening ceremony of the fair, which took place on Thursday, Aug. 27.

"Agriculture is both a key part of Snohomish County's heritage and of its economy," noted Councilmember Gossett. "To have families that have been involved in agriculture for a century demonstrates its importance."

After walking through the wonderful agricultural exhibits and animal barns visitors can check out some of the entertainment venues.

"This year we have created the most diverse grandstand lineup that we have ever seen at the Evergreen State Fair." said Gossett. "We are offering a little bit for everyone from country to more pop and rock than usual."

A late addition to the fair is Seattle Sounders FC stars Fredy Montero and Osvaldo Alonso as part of Fiesta Sunday on Aug. 30 in Monroe. They will sign autographs starting at 3 p.m.

"I can think of no better place to celebrate Snohomish County than the Evergreen State Fair, which embodies everything that makes our county so great," concluded Gossett.

New Lynnwood High School to Open

The new Lynnwood High School, located at 18218 North Road, will open its doors to students in time for the first day of school.

In conjunction with the first two weeks of school September 8 through September 24, 2009 Officers of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office will be conducting School Zone Emphasis Patrols on North Road from 16th to SR 524 in the designated school zones.  Deputies will be specifically targeting speeders in the school zones here and around the county.

"A local resident was the person who suggested these patrols when the high school opened," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "He thought it would be a good idea to re-enforce the need to drive safely from the very beginning."

The school zones will be clearly marked and will see a speed limit reduction from the current 35 Miles Per Hour to 20 Miles Per Hour. Drivers should pay attention to their speed and watch out for the students on walkways along that stretch of roadway.

"As drivers, it's up to us to exert extra caution as kids head back to school," said Gossett. "We should do this in conjunction with teaching our kids to do their part for roadway safety."

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone that Deputies will be out in force to make sure that students are safe in the designated school zones. Please pay attention and slow down in the designated school zones.  There is a "Zero Tolerance Policy" for speeding in school zones and the speeding fines are doubled in these designated school zones.
