Community Transit Breaks
Ground for 'Swift' Service

Earlier this month Community Transit (CT) broke ground for the first Swift station.  Swift is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that will begin service before the end of 2009.

"Swift will be giant step forward for transportation in Snohomish County," said CT Board member and County Councilmember Dave Gossett. "Buses will run so frequently that you won't even need a schedule."

Swift will provide service on 17 miles of Highway 99 between Everett and the Aurora Village Transit Center.  The corridor currently has over 1.2 million passenger boardings a year.  Each transit station will tell you exactly how many minutes it is until the next bus.  Buses will run every 10 minutes with limited stops.

"With limited stops, people will be able to travel from one end of the route to the other much faster than current bus service," added Gossett. "The stations will also connect to local bus routes to allow people to easily travel all over Snohomish County."

These Hybrid buses will be used to reduce pollution and carbon emissions.  This swift service is a cooperative effort between Community Transit and Everett Transit

Martha Lake Airport Community

Park Construction Bid Awarded

The Snohomish County Council has awarded the $3 million bid for the construction of Martha Lake Airport Community Park, 146th St, W, Lynnwood.

"I'm extremely excited that we are able to start construction on the facilities at the Martha Lake Airport Community Park," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "We desperately need more parks to serve our growing population."

Property for the park was purchased several years ago. A public planning process followed to determine the recreational elements of the new park. Features will include trails, picnic shelters, one baseball field, two soccer fields, a skateboard area, parking, and a playground.

"This will be a true community park," said Gossett, "with elements that appeal to a wide range of users. It will be an outstanding addition to our park system."

Gossett also noted that the county will construct a safe walking path connecting the existing Martha Lake Park, with its access to swimming and fishing in the lake, to the new park at the former airfield.  Construction will begin next year.

Executive, Council create economic stimulus plan

The Snohomish County Council and Executive recently announced a plan to improve economic opportunities here during the ongoing financial downturn, including a series of summits related to job growth and creation.

The elected leaders approved a joint resolution creating an economic stimulus plan. The resolution lays out steps for preserving local jobs and positioning Snohomish County for future economic success despite financial instability worldwide.

"It's important to look at what we can do locally to improve our economy," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "We need to work with local businesses to create and maintain local private sector jobs."

Snohomish County will convene a series of economic summits that will include small and large industry leaders and laborers, community, tribal and nonprofit organizations, as well as professionals in finance, education and policy, to identify measures the county can enact to meet the resolution's goals.

"The county will also review its regulations to see if there are ways we can improve the climate for business," said Gossett. "We need to promote family wage jobs in cooperation with the national stimulus package."

Development of stimulus measures will focus first on maximizing and leveraging existing county, state and federal government resources. The county will work closely with nonprofits to kindle economic opportunities.

Periodically during the next year, the county will review steps taken and consider additional strategies to encourage economic revitalization.
