County Teams Up With Community
For Quicker Better Parks

The county's 2008 budget includes funding to spur construction of new park amenities countywide through a matching-grant program. The Youth Amenities and Recreation Development (YARD) grants provide an opportunity to leverage county funds with money and labor from community nonprofits, governments and school districts.

With 10 successful grant applications this year, the county has turned a modest $450,000 investment into nearly $1 million in park and playground improvements throughout Snohomish County.

"It's very exciting to work with others in the community to provide needed park improvements," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "By working together we can offer better services at a lower cost so our kids can have great parks now instead of years down the road."

Local YARD Grant projects include:

Forest View Elementary School
The project includes the following elements:

·        "Play Odyssey," a cluster/tree fort area for climbing, sliding, resting/talking;

County Council Approves Parks Upgrades

The county council has approved spending over $600,000 to restore and upgrade two popular Southwest County Parks. Work on both projects is anticipated to be completed by November 30, 2008.

Forsgren Community Park: The existing baseball field with a soccer field overlay is a sand base, in poor condition and dusty during the drier months. The improvements include installing a new subsurface drainage system and updating the irrigation with a maxi-com system. The outfields will be seeded with a skinned infield. Backstops and fencing will be installed, dugouts will be covered and paths installed for ADA accessibility. Blackberries will be removed and replaced with native plants to enhance the wetland buffer. This facility is highly used by the North Shore Little League.

Esperance Community Park: The ball field is lacking a subsurface drainage system and the irrigation system is outdated and non-functioning. The improvements include tilling and removing rocks, bringing in new infield and outfield materials, installing a maxi-com irrigation system, replacing the backstop and fence and reseeding the field.

Brier Skate Park Funded

Snohomish County is contributing $250,000 towards the construction of skate park at Brier Park, 2903 228th Street SW. The City of Brier is contributing $200,000.

The 16,800-square-foot structure will be completed within 18 months.
