County Honors Fallen
Soldier and Employee

Snohomish County recognized and honored one of its own employees Tuesday, May 13, following his death May 5 while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

County Custody Officer Joseph M. Cerfus, an Army Reserve Soldier with A Company, 5-159 Aviation Regiment, died after sustaining injuries during a joint training exercise at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Center, CFB Wainwright in Alberta, Canada.

The County Council and County Executive jointly declared Tuesday, May 13 as "Joseph M. Cerfus Day in Snohomish County." County flags were flown at half-staff Tuesday.

Cerfus, who began work with Snohomish County Corrections in January 2007.

Cerfus brought to the Department of Corrections a strong sense of teamwork where no job was too small or too big, said Steve Thompson, the county's corrections director.

"Joseph was an asset to the work that we have to do here," Thompson said. "He worked alongside many of our corrections officers and was frontline most of the time."

"Our heart goes out to the family and friends of Joseph Cerfus," said Councilmember Dave Gossett. "We are very grateful to Snohomish County employees who serve - often at great sacrifice - in the Reserves and National Guard,"

Snohomish County is also the home to over 16,000 active duty military and civilian personnel and their families, said Gossett. The County Council and Executive declared Snohomish County a Military Family Friendly County last year, said Gossett.

"Snohomish County continues to offer employment to members of the Armed Forces and their families," said Gossett, "and we encourage all local businesses to do their part based on the model of the Snohomish County Military Family-Friendly Employment Partnership being spearheaded by The Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber."

Brier's Tony Pauly Appointed to
Evergreen State Fair Advisory Board

Anthony "Tony" Pauly of Brier has been appointed by the County Council to the Evergreen State Fair Advisory Board, representing council district 4. Councilmember Dave Gossett recommended his appointment. Pauly will serve through 2009.

"Tony Pauly will make a great member of the Fair Advisory Board," said Gossett. "He grew up on a farm and was an active member of the Future Farmers of American. His past service in local government - he served on school, fire and water boards - will be a valuable asset to the fair board."

The Evergreen State Fair Advisory Board serves to assist the fair manager in reviewing and recommending policies related to the fair.

Conference Tuesday Focuses on Raising Awareness of Poverty's Impacts on Children and Families

Donna Beegle, a nationally renowned public speaker and educator will explore issues surrounding poverty at the 11th annual InterChange Conference on Tuesday, May 20 at the Edmonds Conference Center.

InterChange's theme, "Poverty: There is Hope," aims to increase awareness of how poverty impacts children and families in Snohomish County. InterChange began in 1997 as a way to bring educators, service providers and the community together to better serve youth and others in need.

The InterChange Conference also will examine successful and innovative programs in Snohomish County, while featuring panelists from Hawthorne Elementary School, United Way, Workforce Development Council, Volunteers of America and the Housing Consortium of Everett and Snohomish County.

The Snohomish County Council and Executive recently declared May "Community Action and Poverty Awareness Month".

"Helping people out of poverty is an important role for government," said County Councilmember Dave Gossett. "Too many of our children live in poverty and the future costs are high. We need to move people from poverty to stable jobs and better lives."

Beegle will speak on the differences between immigrant poverty and generational poverty and focus on barriers people face when dealing with educators and social service providers.

Participants also will learn to frame goals from the perspective of people in living in poverty, implement changes in communication styles to reduce conflict and employ techniques to better motivate individuals from impoverished backgrounds.

The day-long conference, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch, costs $25. Advanced registration is required to attend. For more information or a registration form, contact Kristin Roessler at 425-388-7407 or at kristin.roessler@snoco.org.
