Greetings!

I just returned from the Organic Farming Conference in Albuquerque and was truly inspired by over 600 participants that are committed to the organic farming movement here in New Mexico.  Over that last few years I have slowly begun to change my own thinking about how I can make a difference each and everyday.   Although I have always had a garden, I never thought of myself as a link in the local food chain.  This year our commitment at the Center is to expand that link to reach out to Valencia County Producers and introduce into our food program more locally grown and produced items.  We hope that you, the consumer, will support this movement with a higher consciousness to quality, locally grown items and the freshness of food.  I believe strongly that aging gracefully can not be achieved without a commitment to good nutrition and an honoring of our environment
Join us in a commitment to sustainability

old wise oneDear Old Wise One,

My mom is failing in health and I am very confused on what is the difference between a nursing home and assisted living.  Can you help?

-Very confused but not from Alzheimer's

Dear Very Confused,

Don't fret, many individuals need clarification on this issue.  Every state is slightly different, but in New Mexico here are the basics:  Nursing Homes are licensed by Department of Health to provide medical care.  They are staffed by licensed professionals i.e.; physicians, nurses, CNAs etc.   Currently, most individuals reside in nursing homes for rehabilitation (short stays), for recovery from major surgery or physical decline due to falls or disease, and long term stays due to deteriorating conditions that are complicated and need daily medical oversight.   Assisted Living is based on a social model program and does not provide medical services.  Department of Health licenses assisted living programs as adult residential care facilities.  They are usually staffed by non-medical homemakes and personal care attendants.  They can help with assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and can assist with medications with state-approved training.  Both programs are usually comprehensive in delivering services including meals, activities and other supportive programs.  You can find out more through ALSO (Assisted Living Services Organization) alsonm.org and New Mexico Health Care Association:  nmhca.org.

Remember to always visit every program that you are considering for your family or friend and insist on seeing their license and program narrative or description of services.

Good Food Puts You In a Good Mood
by the Green House Rotisserie

honeyIf you are new to the area or just haven't had time to get around, we are blessed with many resources are in the county for wonderful local produce and products.  This month we feature one of our favorites, Ken Hays' Honey and Apple Farm which produces Bosque Farms Honey.

Located at 400 Esperanza, Bosque Farms, NM the Hays' Farm is a beautiful orchard of 500 apple trees that provide Mr. Hays' thousands of bees with an abundant of fragrant blossoms. They also feast on the fields of clover blossoms in the area.   Ken's fresh honey is available at their local store or you can call  for ordering information at 869-2369. We recommend that you take a drive to the local farm.   Ken's knowledge of bees is amazing (he teaches bee-keeping too) and the country shop is a joy to visit.  If you are lucky enough, Ken Hays might be there and can tell you the story of honey-making and the wonderful healing properties of bees and the products they make.  Apples are available throughout the fall season and you can visit nmapples.com for additional information on the apple growers of New Mexico.  This web site also has lots of great information on gardening and other local resources.  We love the honey sticks and serve them at the Rotisserie and Spa to sweeten our teas or just to sweeten our mouths.

Community Park - Special Events and Weddings

The Community Park is preparing for its spring and summer events and encourage you to consider using the facility for your special affair.  Information is on-line about the use of the park and we are excited that this year the gardens will be at their peak.  Ed Hench, formerly on the landscape team of the Cappola Vineyard in California,  has joined the Center as our full-time gardener and landscape expert and he has worked hard throughout the fall and winter to groom the park's rose gardens, pond and field so that this spring we truly should have an amazing garden to entertain in.  Stop by to watch the garden grow and picnic with a heart-healthy lunch from the Green House Rotisserie.
