Greetings!

Greetings Science House-ers! Autumn is upon us, and with it a slew of new projects to pursue.  Much of September was spent working on ChocolateFest 2010 with The Cooper Union.  We are proud to announce that the undergrad students for the Chocolate Project were interviewed by ABC World News about their work testing chocolate over the summer!  The segment will be airing within the next two weeks, but you can read more about this project below, and find photos of the team on our Facebook Page.  We couldn't be prouder of the Cooper Union Team for all that they have accomplished!

We also have a new addition to the Science House team- Peter Sorgenfrei.  Peter is a one-man consulting, competitive intelligence, and market research firm who has been brought into the Science House fold to assist us in building new bridges between the science and business communities.  Welcome, Peter!

For today's newsletter, we're also giving a special shout-out to Science House regulars Diana Yousef-Martinek and Ayesha Khanna, who have been busy planning TedXGotham.  This innagural event will take place at the Cooper Union on Friday, October 15th.  Apply now for tickets-- they're going fast!

Science House Capital
Science House portfolio company HandHold Adaptive is proud to present AutismTrack, a new iPhone application available on iTunes.  AutismTrack is a journaling tool that allows caregivers of those with autism to easily track interventions, behaviors, and symptoms.  Recently, Science House has begun collaborating with Jeff Ambroziak, to discuss commercializing his groundbreaking 3-D mapmaking technique. Read more about his book here!  We're also currently finalizing a deal to license some fantastic techology with a local university we can't quite name yet, and have made investments in another company operating in stealth mode.  Interested in becoming a Science House portfolio company?  Be sure to sign up for one of our Pitch Sessions!

Science House Foundation
The Science House Foundation has been growing by leaps and bounds, and working to develop new global networking projects to get kids excited about science.  Our newest projects include robotics, air quality testing kits, and even iPads into schools.  Learn more about our grant success stories here!  Equipment for our our MicroGlobalScope program will be going out to schools within the this month, so be sure to check the MicroGlobalScope website as students around the world start blogging about their work. Finally, kudos to our good friends at Science for Citizens, who recently "graduated" as part of Good Company Ventures summer program.

Children extracting DNA at Maker Faire
Science House went to the New York City Maker Faire on Saturday, September 24th.  We saw tons of local vendors making interesting products, including our good friends from the BioBus and DIYBioNYC showing kids how to extract DNA from strawberries! You can see a video of their strawberry experiement (taken at a New York street fair) here.   Also presenting at Maker Faire were Science House regulars Shane Hope displaying his artwork and Laure Parsons displaying the Book Liberator, recent Science House speaker Heather Knight, and the folks from The Museum of Mathematics (Science House Founder James Jorasch sits on the Board of Trustees).

SCIENCE HOUSE SPECIAL PROJECTS
The Chocolate Project with Cooper Union

James at ChocolateFest
James Jorasch samples chocolate at Cooper Union
Over the summer, Cooper Union students Andrew Baik and Charmian Wu have been toiling alongside Professor Ruben Savizky analyzing over 70 different chocolate samples to learn about the hundreds of different compounds present in Science House's favorite sweet stuff.  On September 14th, we stormed the halls of Cooper Union for a day of "subjective analysis", i.e. chocolate tastings!  Data from the experiment is still being compiled, but we're already anxious to start on our next food-related experiment!  We may be looking into olive oil, coffee, wine . . . The possibilities are endless.  What food items would you like to see put through HPLC analysis?  For more info on the Chocolate Project, you can check out the project blog, and pictures up on our Facebook Page

Heather Knight Speaks at Science House
Future World
Heather Knight takes questions from the crowd.

On Friday, September 10th, Science House was proud to welcome young roboticist Heather Knight.  Heather is the creator of Marilyn Monrobots and pursuing her doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.  The Science House audience learned all about what goes into building "social robots" which can learn from their surroundings, tell stories, and touch your heart.  The audience also learned about several social robots already out and about in today's world, such as Paro, telepresence robots from Anybot, and Kismet, the emotional robot.    Our guests were encourged to go forth and create their own social robots.  Certainly an evening of animated discussion on what possibilities the future holds with the help of our new robot friends!
