Greetings!

As the summer comes to a close, we at Science House pause to reflect on all that we've accomplished, and all that we have yet to do-- a lot!

Science House meets regularly with influential people all over New York who are working to promote and advance science throughout the world.  We're already listed by the Science Alliance of the New York Academy of Sciences as a company to get to know when networking in New York.  Notable new friends of Science House include Frank Rimalovski and Jeffrey Carr of NYU, Thomas Campbell Jackson, Paul Roossin, and Gerry Ohrstrom (who met with Science House after hearing about us at TED Global), financial expert Todd Stimmell, Robert Goldberg of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest, and Dr. Xin-Yun Huang of Cornell-Weill Medical College.

Read on for more news on our current projects.

Science House Capital
Science House is continuing to work with several researchers and businesses that have come to us through our pitch sessions, and looking forward to an already busy fall schedule.  Our established  portfolio companies continue to thrive-- HandHold Adaptive is featured on the cover of ADVANCE Magazine, and Pronia Medical Systems has received FDA clearance for its GlucoCare Intensive Glycemic Control System.  Learn more about Science House Pitch Meetings here!

Science House Foundation
The Foundation is currently reviewing applications to  MicroGlobalScope's 10-school pilot program, and getting ready to ship our microscopes to schools across the world.   We've also been pleased to see our support in action-- Science House scholarship recipient Juan Carlos Ortiz Rhoton (only 12 years old!) was recently awarded a Bronze Medal at the International Mathematics Competition in Korea.  Also check out the blog of School is Open, which is providing teacher training to educators in Afghanistan with a generous equipment grant from the Science House Foundation.

Science House Network

The friends of Science House have been as busy as we are! Science for Citizens continues to have plenty of new projects posted regularly on their website- if you are looking for volunteer science opportunities, this is the place to look.  Here at the Science House mothership, we've held events on personal genomics, star formation, chess / math / madness, and more.  Coming up for the fall, we'll have more talks from veteran speakers Adrienne Tucker and John Varghese, as well as some new faces.   Upcoming events include Heather Knight (president of Marilyn Monrobots and researcher at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute) on September 10th, and esteemed neuroscientist and author Elkhonon Goldberg of NYU will be joining us on October 15th.

Science House "Events App" Coming Soon!

Science House has been busy creating a brand new iPhone and iPod Touch application-- an easy way to discover science events going on in your area.  The app, which will be released within the next few months, features a simple and searchable format listing  local science events, and will serve as your pocket guide to discovering new science  venues around town. Starting with the major science hubs of the world, the initial release will include New York City, London, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and LA.   If you are an event organizer and would like your events listed, be sure to send your press releases here.  Stay tuned to this newsletter as we get closer to our release date!

SCIENCE HOUSE SPECIAL PROJECTS
FlaskForward: Reviews by and for Lab-Rats

Science House is seeking research scientists to contribute to a new blog on lab equipment and technology. The blog will be the go-to source for informative, irreverent and up-to-the minute reviews on the latest gadgets and gizmos for the research scientist. Interested in editing new blog posts?  Want to tell the world about your shiny new laser?  Wasting too much time in the lab, and want to tell the world?   Whether your field is proteomics or plasma physics, spectroscopy or synthetic biology, we want to hear from you!

SCIENCE HOUSE EVENTS
Special at Science House: Career Workshops

Future WorldScience House will be holding three fall workshops for scientists interested in changing careers, entrepreneurship, public speaking, or  all of the above!  Learning how to effectively communicate the importance of your research or business is an invaluable skill, but can be quite tricky when trying to boil down years of research into a 10 minute pitch presentation.  Join us as we discuss how to most effectively present yourself, your work, or your business in these salon-style workshops.  You'll be bringing yourself and your resume or presentation, we'll be bringing coaches, experts, and snacks!  Send us an email if you are interested in being a part of our fall workshop series.
