BRE Datsun Issue: #035
A New Stainless Steel Carrot
July 26, 2012
Stainless Carrot main

Greetings!

We've been thoroughly enjoying the summer.  Several great events have occurred and one of our favorites was the Jefferson 500 at Summit Pt, WV in May.  Every moment there was a new adventure, including testing (successfully) our new mirrors on a BRE Datsun 240Z Tribute car.  We highly recommend this event and share more details below.

June brought the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.  Our primary focus there was the DeltaWing (powered by Nissan), which did fabulously well until hour 6 when an overzealous Toyota prototype driver took it out.  Our story in Automobile magazine is on stands now and our story for Grassroots Motorsports will be in the next issue.  We'll also have stories in the next Corvette and Forza magazines.

And speaking of Grassroots Motorsports, we're sure you're familiar with the quality of this incredible magazine.  It's sister magazine, Classic Motorsports, contains a plethora of Brock-related info in the current info.  It has the normal column Brock writes for every issue (this issue is on the loss of school shop class), a feature article on the Cobra Daytona Coupes and info on Ebbro's new BRE Hino Samurai die-cast model (a car Peter designed in 1967... more info below).

Then the most exciting news we have to share with you is regarding Sylvia Wilkinson's classic book, The Stainless Steel Carrot.  For years we have all been begging Sylvia to have the book reprinted.  And if you know Sylvia, you know a simple reprinting would never do. Check out the exciting details below on what a gem she's created for us and its availability.

Next up for us is the Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August. Cobra is the featured marque as its 50th Anniversary is celebrated.  The Cobras will be our primary focus there but we will have the new Stainless Steel Carrot, hot off the presses, with autograph sessions with Sylvia and John.  And we can bring whatever Datsun items you would like us to bring for you.

All the best,

Gayle and Peter Brock

BRE Hino Samurai model

EBBRO 1:43 scale model with all the details

Hino modelBrock is obviously extremely proud of the success of the Cobra Daytona Coupe, but another of his favorite designs was the BRE Hino Samurai. It was perhaps the most advanced GT car design of its time. The Samurai, which he named in honor of Japan's famed warrior class, appeared on track in Japan at the Fuji Grand Prix in '67, and created quite a stir with famed actor Toshiro Mifune, as BRE's honorary team manager.

Several unique design features that were never utilized on the Daytona Coupes were successfully applied to the Samurai (see product on website here for a full description). We're very proud to announce that a limited number of BRE Hino Samurai GTs have been produced by EBBRO in 1/43 scale for the discriminating automotive enthusiast. We've gotten our supply first and Brock has signed each of them.

"I don't think I've ever seen the accuracy in detail exhibited by this gem of a model. It's just incredible how closely EBBRO has been able to duplicate every nuance and subtle shape of the car's original form, right down to its elegant, super light weight, cast mag wheels and the Ring Airfoil", Brock shares. "It even has the tiny control rod used to actuate the wing! It's finished in the brilliant red-orange I originally chose for the car's debut in Japan, with the graphically elegant, stylized number 3 specifically chosen to accent its form."

The BRE Hino Samurai GT is a model that will stand out in any collector's display case. You can order your model here, complete with jewel box display case and Peter Brock's personal signature on the base plate.....a connoisseurs' delight!

Jefferson 500 at Summit Point

One of the best events we've been to in years

J500 Brock in CoupeIt seemed like everywhere we turned at the Jefferson 500 there was some wonderful eye candy to behold... vintage races, car shows, car corrals, an evening group dinner, even karting!  Brock was the Grand Marshal and had a special treat when Charlie Stringfellow brought out his stunning McCluskey-built Cobra Daytona Coupe for Peter to drive as the pace car and give worker rides in (very special and very gracious indeed!). J500 Datsun 5102The area Datsun 510 clubs were out in force, celebrating 510 Day (May 10th).  They found a beautiful park-like setting to spend the weekend at, awards were given, Peter Brock autographed models given out, etc.  It was a great time!

More great images of the event can be seen at  Bill Stoler's website here and Terry Johnsen's site here.  We highly recommend you make it to this event next year.

It's tough to say good-bye

But the discontinuations begin

Datsun 510 TA shirt With some of the new product offerings we've added the last few years, it's time to start discontinuing some products, hard as that will be as we love everything we offer.  First up will be the BRE Datsun 510 Trans-Am shirt.  At this time, we have a small number of shirts left in every size but men's small (even a few youth shirts, 2XLs and one 3XL).  If you have, or have seen one of these shirts, you know the detailed printing is amazing.  Get them while they last!

New BRE mirrors rock the Zs

Brock's constant quest for perfection has resulted in these beautifully stunning, functional mirrors

Z Mirrors2 While at the Jefferson 500, Brock was able to test out his theory for a new set of mirrors he's been working on. Woody Staub allowed Brock to grab a drill and within seconds, install a new set of BRE mirrors onto Woody's elegant BRE Tribute 240Z racer (actually it was Woody doing the drilling while Brock marked the spots).  Brock explained to Woody (and everyone at the Jefferson 500 dinner) the importance of situational awareness and the value of these BRE mirrors in reducing the time spent trying to determine where cars are around you.  Brock installed them and Woody gained an entire 2 seconds on his lap time!  If you want to learn more from Brock about mirror shape, aerodynamics and function, go here.

"Stainless Steel Carrot" by Sylvia Wilkinson

Continuation of a classic is spell binding and will be in our hands August 15th

Stainless Steel CarrotAuthor Sylvia Wilkinson followed the BRE team in '71 and '72 and wrote about John Morton's quest to be a top driver (he of course accomplished this in spades) and the BRE Team's pursuit of the Trans-Am 2.5 Championship.  The book has been out of print for years and fans have begged for it to reprinted, for about that many years.

Sylvia has outdone herself!  She has updated the book with an additional 46 pages, entitled: "40 Years On - Revisiting an Auto Racing Odyssey".  This meaty additional chapter is based on interviews Sylvia has conducted with team members the last few years, getting their thoughts on current motor racing and on BRE, looking back and knowing what they

know today.

And to go even further, the book now contains 150 color and black & white photos.  Photos follow Morton's youth, the BRE days as well as Morton's subsequent racing career.  The photos and substantial captions could be a book on their own.  This is a book you have to have!

We're going to offer something a bit logistically challenging (for us that is).  The books will arrive at Monterey directly from the printer for the

Motorsports Reunion 8/17-19.  We have scheduled an autograph session with Sylvia, Morton and Brock for that Friday and Saturday at the Laguna-Seca track.

  • If you will be at the track, you can get your book at our booth (while supplies last) and have it autographed at the same time (if you're there during the two autograph sessions).
  • If you will be at the track and want to be guaranteed a book: It is possible we will run out of our initial supply of books at the track.  We have provided an option on the website where you can order your book now and we will have it on hold for you at our booth.
  • If you won't be at Monterey but would like these three signatures (or a subset thereof), you can order the signatures with your book order on our website at no cost between now and August 10th (8/10 is when we pack our trailer for Monterey).  At the track we will take your book down the autograph line and have it signed by whoever you have chosen in your order.  Your autographed book will then be shipped to you when we return from Monterey on the 21st.  Such a deal!
Go here to place your order and/or see a great set of excerpts from this very special book!

Want a little Datsun something at Monterey?

As Cobra is the marque (and its 50th Anniversary) at this year's Monterey Motorsport Reunion, that will be our primary focus.... although one of the most exciting things we'll have there is the new Stainless Steel Carrot and the Fri and Sat autograph sessions with author Sylvia Wilkinson and driver John Morton.  With that said, we won't have a lot of other Datsun products there due to space constraints.  If you'll be there and you'd like us to bring something for you, just let us know and we'll have it for you!

We hope to see you at Monterey!
