Spring has sprung!
To all of our Charlotte Sports Commission Members and Friends:

Message from Executive Director,
Jeff Beaver

I recently said goodbye to one of my heroes...A.B. "Gus" Purcell, my high school football coach at Myers Park High School (just a few short years ago!). Coach passed away at the age of 87 after a courageous battle with complications from Alzheimer's. His wonderful family members, including his wife of 62 years, were with him, and many friends and other relatives were close by, as well.

I mention this for a number of reasons, not the least of which is my admiration and respect for my mentor back when, as a high school student, I needed all the leadership training I could get. Also, he gave me my start (along with my Dad and big brother) in really understanding the game of football. His teachings gave me a chance to go on into college and even a very short stint in the Pros with my love of the game, and for that I will always be eternally grateful.

Coach Purcell was, as I have often related, a man ahead of the times when it came to this rough and tumble sport. He gave my team mates and me a chance to look into the future, so to speak, as we followed his lead and his vision with his innovative plays and style of executing his game plans. To be honest, because of the razzle-dazzle style of offense we played, several slightly older friends have told me that they would actually come home on weekends to watch the Gus Purcell-led Myers Park Mustangs take the field rather than stay on campus at their colleges to watch the style being played there.

Above all though is the fact that he taught us to love our teammates, never putting anyone down because of a mistake, and to work together as a team in every sense of the word.

We all have had someone like Gus Purcell in our lives, I'm sure, and I count myself as one of the lucky ones to have known such a wonderful man for the past 53 years.

Fight Night for Kids

Fight Night 2010

The 12th Annual Fight Night for Kids TKO'd the night placing another incredible event under its belt. This year's event included 6 boxing bouts, and for the first time in Fight Night history, two thirteen year old Charlotte Boxing Academy students who stepped toe to toe at center ring. Fight Night guests were fortunate this year to have Lucia Rijker, of Million Dollar Babyas our knockout celebrity as she stepped into the ring to introduce the women's bout.

We are especially thankful for the support of this year's sponsors...the The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte, the National Rifle Association, Perry's at SouthPark, Jack Daniel's, Keffer Hyundai, and Tinder Box...as well as the generous help from our partners at Ascension Aviation International, East Coast Entertainment, Fight Lab Promotions, the Hilton Charlotte Center City, the Tinder Box, and North American Lawn and Landscape. And, of course, a big thank you goes out to everyone in attendance as well as the fantastic donors who made this year's event so successful.

CIAA

2011 CIAA Tournament

The time-honored CIAA tournament took-over Charlotte February 28th through March 5th for its 99th anniversary. Shaw University of Raleigh, NC took home the championship trophies for both the men's and women's tournament. Charlotte's own Johnson C. Smith University gained impressive honors with their women's team battling their way into the championship game, and men's team into the semi-finals. The 2011 CIAA is expected to have generated $40 million in spending over the 6 day tournament, an increasing of 10-15% from last year. As a member of the Local Organizing Committee the CRSC assisted with the event by gathering nearly 200 volunteers, publicizing the event, and assisting with the volunteer orientation.

NCAA

NCAA UNCC

The NCAA Men's Basketball Championship 2nd and 3rd Rounds were held in Time Warner Cable Arena on March 18th and 20th. The games drew a tremendous crowd, particularly for the 3rd round on Sunday where the Duke Blue Devils defeated the Michigan Wolverines and UNC Tar Heels battled the Washington Huskies leading both NC teams into the next round. The CRSC assisted UNC Charlotte with the tournament as a member of the Local Organizing Committee. Much of the assistance came in the form of coordinating signage, assisting with publicity of the event, gathering volunteers through our database, and assisting with the volunteer orientation prior to the event.

Race to the Top

 Race to the Top

The first-ever Race to the Top took place on March 26th at the new Duke Energy Center in Uptown. Despite the wind, rain and frigid temperatures, nearly 500 runners came out to battle their way up the 49 stories of the building. For the first year, the race was capped at 500 and was reached nearly 4 days out from the event. There was extensive media coverage prior to the event including a front page article in the Charlotte Observer, among others. The CRSC was even covered internationally for the first time through a German Running  and Tower Climbing website. During the last flight of the day, 16 of Charlotte's Firefighters raced to the top in full turn-out gear. The sight was moving and very well received with the fire fighters already looking forward to the challenge of next year's event. Race to the Top was a huge success and Charlotte's runners now have a unique challenge to look forward to each spring.

Tuesday after the race, the three male and three female winners were invited to an awards breakfast to receive their medals and prizes. Stephanie Hucko the women's division winner, powered up the 1,194 steps in 8 minutes 20 seconds. Michael Creason the men's division winner, made impressive time by finishing in 7 minutes 29 seconds. During the event, the Levine Children's Hospital was presented with a check for a portion of the proceeds, and a secondary check from the Charlotte Fire Fighter's Association for additional proceeds they raised through their participation in the event. In addition, Captain Jonah Smith was presented an award for being the fastest firefighter, finishing in 14 minutes 42 seconds.
