GREETINGS TO ALL OF OUR CHARLOTTE SPORTS COMMISSION MEMBERS & FRIENDS:
Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director

Where in the world did this year go already?? It seems like it was just a short while ago that we were wrapping up Fight Night for Kids and the CIAA and Southern Conference basketball tournaments, but now we're looking at the end of the year fast approaching with the ACC Football Championship game's events and galas being planned as we speak. All I can say is "thank goodness" for my staff and the leadership our Board provides when things are really moving as they are. And, speaking of my staff, we have welcomed our newest addition: Stephanie York, who comes to us from the Harlem Globetrotters and is our new Assistant Director of Marketing. Coming up over the next 3 months are a number of things which will have something for everyone...football fans will be able to enjoy the 2nd annual Commemorative Classic between Johnson C Smith and Livingstone in November, the aforementioned ACC Championship, and the Meineke Car Care Bowl in December. NASCAR returns in October with the Bank of America 500, while great high school basketball will be highlighted in late December with the Bojangles Shoot Out. Throw in the Thunder Road Marathon in December as well as the USATF Club Cross Country Championships and you truly have a "sports smorgasbord" of events to choose from. And that brings us back to one of the great charity galas in this part of the United States with Fight Night for Kids 2011 on January 20, 2011...whew! I guess my point is simply this...time flies when you're having fun, and the Sports Commission is indeed having fun bringing as much to the Charlotte Region as possible to ensure that we are fulfilling our mission. Let us know how you feel... |
110th USGA Women's Amateur
Great Golf. Great Course. Great opportunity for the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission to accomplish its mission by impacting the region through sports. Although this is one of the smallest parts of what the staff can do to help the region, it was a huge help the USGA Women's Pro Am and the staff at Charlotte Country Club. Over the course of the 7 days of golf played, the CRSC staff accumulated 112.5 hours at the club volunteering.
The Sports Commission would like to congratulate all156 women that participated in the tournament this year and a special congratulation to Danielle Kang, this year's USGA U.S. Women's Amateur Champion!
Fun Event Facts:
- 156 competitors in the field with ages ranging from 12 to 58
- 80 players in the field are competing in their first U.S. Women's Amateur
- There are 32 States & 16 Countries represented

Carolina Panthers Countdown to Kickoff Luncheon
Carolina Panthers Countdown to Kickoff Luncheon presented by CPI Security was certainly a touchdown event for Classroom Central, The Charlotte Touchdown Club, and CRSC! On Friday, August 27th, nearly 1,000 fans and sponsors packed the Convention Center for the chance to meet and dine with the entire Panthers team and coaching staff. Following performances by the Harding University High School Band of Gold, the Top Cats and a brief presentation by Classroom Central, Coach Fox and six of his most distinguished players took the stage for a question and answer Session. Once again, the luncheon proved to be a great success, raising $40,000 for its beneficiary Classroom Central. On behalf of Classroom Central, Charlotte Touchdown Club and CRSC, we would like to thank our sponsors: CPI Security, Time Warner Cable, News Talk 1110 WBT-AM, Conder Flag Company, and The Nichols Company. In addition, we would also like to thank all who attended and helped make this such a great event!

3rd Annual Hog Jog 5K
The rain and ominous looking weather didn't keep over 700 runners from hoofin' it through the streets of Uptown at our 3rd Annual Hog Jog 5K held on September 11th, 2010. After the race, runners participated in the Post-Race Party which included the infamous Finlandia Bloody Mary Competition, numerous food, product, and sponsor vendors, and entertainment by Mick and the Ultras. This year's event held special meaning falling on the 10th anniversary of September 11th, 2001. In recognition of this, CRSC partnered with the Charlotte Rotary donating a total of $779 dollars to their Public Safety Scholarship Fund.
Special thanks to our sponsors: Charlotte's got a Lot, Run for Your Life, Bruegger's Bagels, Jim 'N Nick's BBQ, Diamond Springs, Endurance Magazine, Finlandia Vodka, US Bancorp, and Powerade.

YSPN Speaker Series

The 3rd Annual YSPN Speaker Series was a huge success! Carolina Panther's President, Danny Morrison spoke to a crowd of over 100 young professionals and guests from the greater Charlotte business community at Hance Auditorium on the campus of Johnson & Wales University. Mick Mixon, the Voice of the Carolina Panthers, was the event's distinguished emcee. During the event, Morrison spoke of his career; comparing his experiences at TCU and Wafford to his time with the Carolina Panthers, describing his path to Charlotte, and briefly touching on where he sees the team going in the future. The event concluded with a brief question and answer session. Following the event, YSPN rounded out the evening with a reception at Pie Town. |
High School Leadership Summit on Health and Fitness
The 2010 High School Leadership Summit on Health and Fitness, on October 14th, looks to be another great event this year. Since the refocus of the event, we have a newly developed group of speakers on Leadership, Health, and Fitness. This year's student-athletes are in for a great experience with notable speakers such as Mike Rucker - Former Carolina Panther, Chef Mark Allison - Decorated Johnson & Wales University professor, and the star of this year's panel discussion: Muhsin Muhammad. This event has been a staple community development event for the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission and will continue to be for years to come with our event partners: Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Johnson & Wales University, and Mike Rucker Health & Wellness.
