GREETINGS TO ALL OF OUR CHARLOTTE SPORTS COMMISSION MEMBERS & FRIENDS:

CRSC

Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director

Executive Director

The old saying indicates that "some things never change", and while this is true in many cases, it's not always the case. The Sports Commission has just experienced such a change with the departure of our long-time colleague and friend, Bill McMillan, who has accepted the position of Senior Director of National Sales with Visit Charlotte, the hospitality arm of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. And, while this is a big change for us, it's a great addition for Visit Charlotte and the CRVA...plus, we get to keep Bill close by...just down the street!

Bill's impact on the Charlotte Region while with the Sports Commission has been widely felt because of his impressive work ethic and his willingness to go the extra mile. The good news, of course, is that he's still in Charlotte working to bring events, conventions and meetings to the Queen City. Interestingly enough, that's a lot like what he was helping to do here, so we all will continue to benefit by his move.

I have made a few changes with the Sports Commission staff as a result, and it's important that you are aware of these changes and the folks involved. While I will remain the Executive Director and Mike Mistler will continue his incredible work as our Director of Operations (Mike is the longest tenured employee of the CRSC, having been with us for just over 12 years!), I've asked Chris Clouden to move up from Director of Events to become our Senior Director of Events and Marketing and Chris Raynor to assume the role of our Assistant Director of Events. We are also in the process of interviewing for the position of Assistant Director of Marketing/ Office Manager which Chris Raynor had been holding down for us until his recent promotion.

The good news is that we have not slowed down one bit, and as a matter of fact just might be doing more than ever as the sports scene in Charlotte continues to grow and change. We're working to create and manage an iconic new running event...we're very much in the mix to make the upcoming edition of the ACC Football Championship the best ever...we are helping with the USGA's Women's Amateur Championship which takes place August 9th-15th at Charlotte Country Club...and the beat goes on!

From all of us at the Sports Commission... here's wishing everyone a great Summer!

Representatives from the City, the State, the families and friends of the inaugural inductees and, of course, NASCAR were all in attendance, joining  thousands of racing fans and history buffs to help honor not only the 5 people inducted but also the legacy of one of the world's most popular past times.
Highlighting the festivities were the appearances and remarks from Richard Petty and Junior Johnson, as well as family members of Dale Earnhardt, Bill France Senior and Bill France Jr.

Congratulations to the 2010 Inductees:

2010 Charlotte UltraSwim
   UltraSwim
The Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center was the site of the 2010 Charlotte UltraSwim which was held May 13th-16th. The success of the 2008 US Olympic Team gave impetus to another super event, not the least of which was the excitement generated by the competitors that included, among others, Olympians Michael Phelps, Rick Berens, Cullen Jones , Amanda Weir and Peter Vanderkaay.

Thanks go out to Jeff Gaeckle and David Marsh of SwimMAC Carolina and all of the folks who made this year's event the best ever. As one of USA Swimming's Grand Prix events, this was one of the best organized, most competitive and most enjoyable meets ever held in the Queen City. Also, Wendy's and Presbyterian Sports Medicine provided the funding for the prizes in the pro events.

This year, the winner of the "Charlotte Sports Commission Men's 1500 Meter Freestyle" was 2008 Olympian Peter Vanderkaay .

Johnson C. Smith junior Shermaine Williams won a second-straight NCAA championship in the 100-meter hurdles and Leford Green of Johnson C. Smith won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 48.67.  He also finished second in the 400 meters.  Only Olympic medalist Bershawn Jackson has run faster at an NCAA Division II Championship (48.50).  Tanya Zeferjahn of Queens University won the 10,000-meter title (34:46.59) for her second-consecutive national championship in the event.  She also finished second in the 5000 meter run.
