Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director

Executive Director

Well, we all made it! 2009 proved to be a challenge in so many ways, as we are all very much aware, but thankfully, in spite of the various pitfalls and surprises, the fabric that makes up our Region held together over the past 12 months and is now making every effort to become even stronger. And, as a result, our "sports scene" is the beneficiary of the many partnerships that abound and the willingness to work together that Charlotte and our Region are famous for.

Our professional teams are all thriving, even when the economy wreaks havoc in so many ways, and our schools and colleges are showing signs of growth and success with their athletic programs. In 2010, we are continuing our efforts to bring Division-1 football to the campus at UNC Charlotte...we now have a firm date for the Grand Opening of the NASCAR Hall of Fame...we are playing host to the Southern Conference Men's and Women's basketball tournaments...the USGA has awarded the 2010 Women's Amateur Golf Championship to the Queen City...and last, but certainly not least, we are hosting the ACC Football Championship at Bank of America Stadium in December. These are all "new" events for our Region, joining an already full slate of games, tournaments and Championships that are on tap.

Yes, the same challenges still exist, but we have learned that Charlotte's "can-do spirit" has overcome many obstacles in the past and will surely do so again. So get out and attend the events of your choice...offer your services as a volunteer...pull for your favorite team...help out however you choose. We have proven over the years that team-work makes things happen around here, and 2010 will be no exception...and remember, we're talking about fun and games for everyone. Enjoy!

Upcoming Events...

High School Football Team Of The Year

For the past 12 years, the Sports Commission has honored an area prep football team as the region's High School Football Team of the Year.  The Sports Commission takes great pride in bestowing the award and it is presented to the area team that best exemplifies the outstanding characteristics of hard work, dedication, perseverance and sportsmanship.  Area media personalities and CRSC staff vote to decide each year's winner.

The 2009 recipient of the trophy was Butler High School.  The Bulldogs defeated state powers Independence (twice), Richmond and Jack Britt on their way to a perfect 15-0 season and their first state football championship in school history.   Head Coach Mike Newsome received the trophy live on WBTV's Football Friday Night on December 4, 2009, presented by CRSC's Mike Mistler and Caroline Smith.

Other 2009 nominees were Charlotte Latin, Concord First Assembly, Monroe and West Rowan.  Previous winners of the award are A.L. Brown-Kannapolis ('97), Vance ('98), Butler ('99), Independence ('00, '02, '05, '06), Piedmont ('01), Charlotte Latin ('03), Charlotte Catholic ('04), Mt. Pleasant ('07), and South Pointe-Rock Hill ('08).
