TO CHARLOTTE SPORTS COMMISSION MEMBERS & FRIENDS:

CRSC

Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director

Executive DirectorYou have previously read in this section of our newsletter about Charlotte's proud history as host for great sporting events, especially over the past 15 years. Well, we are now in the running for one of the world's best known tournaments for the years 2018 or 2022... the FIFA World Cup!

We are one of 27 cities nationwide with a love of soccer and that are still in the running, and the US Bid Committee will choose 18 US finalists in December for further consideration for either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup events. In December 2010, FIFA (Federation Inernationale de Football Association) will then choose which country and which 12 cities in that country will host the event.

If you are interested in seeing this famous, internationally popular tournament played in the Queen City at Bank of America Stadium, there is a way to show your support... by "signing" your name and expressing your support on an initial online petition to FIFA! This is a grassroots effort to include as many people as possible, with a minimum of 50,000 required to enhance our bid chances; furthermore, this petition process is a critical part of the overall bid, as the USA Bid Committee has asked each city in the running to participate. We will be competing with 26 other cities in the USA, and all of these groups will also be attempting to get the greatest base of fan support possible, as demonstrated by the number of petition signees per city.

Visit www.gousabid.com/city  and Support Charlotte, NC. Place your  name on the petition today!

Thanks for your help... by signing this petition, you will be part of "Team Charlotte", striving together to bring one of, if not THE greatest sporting event in the world to the United States and the Queen City.

Congratulations to...
  • Nolan Mills captured the coveted Charlotte City Amateur Golf Championship with a final round 72 at The Quail Hollow Club, outlasting former pro Brett Boner, who finished 3 shots back. The event was held August 14-16 and contested over 3 of Charlotte's premier layouts...Carolina Golf Club, Myers Park Country Club and Quail Hollow, site of the PGA's Quail Hollow Championship.
  • Charlotte's QCAA Force Basketball 9U Red team won the US Basketball Association National Championship Tournament, beating another AAU team, the Tennessee Elite, by the score of 26-22.
  • Kings Mountain's Dremiel Byers won the Silver Medal in the Greco-Roman discipline at the World Wrestling Championships in Denmark.

The Championships took place from August 13-15 at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics Center (HFFA) and featured internationally-sanctioned competition in team, duet, solo, and free routine combination synchronized swimming performances.  The following 13 nations competed:  Argentina, Aruba, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela.  Canada took the gold and Colombia the silver.  The participants were treated to an entertaining Opening Ceremony at HFFA that included dinner provided by some of the finest restaurants in the Huntersville/Lake Norman area.  The closing banquet concluded the championships at the US National Whitewater Center.  Excursions were also set up for the participants to go to Carowinds and Concord Mills.

Panthers Kickoff

The eighth annual Carolina Panthers Countdown to Kickoff Luncheon presented by CPI Security was a touchdown for success! On August 28, 2009, the Harding University High School Band of Gold started the morning with a National Anthem followed by a brief presentation from the beneficiary, Classroom Central. The event, held at the Charlotte Convention Center by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the CRSC, featured the following Carolina Panthers during a Question and Answer session: Coach Fox, Jon Beason, Jake Delhomme, Jordan Gross, Chris Harris, Damione Lewis, and Muhsin Muhammad.
The CRSC, Touchdown Club, and Carolina Panthers are extremely grateful to the event sponsors: CPI Security, Conder Flag Company, Time Warner Cable, and News Talk 1110 WBT-AM. For information on how to reserve a table for 2010, please visit www.charlottesports.org/countdown

Hog Jog Logo

The 2nd Annual Hog Jog presented by NARI took place on Saturday, September 12.  A total of 858 runners registered for this year's race, which was up from last year's 725.  Additionally, we had 33 participants in the Piglet Run that also featured mascots RAY, Rufus, Homer, Brueggie, Lugnut and the official race mascot, Babe.  A lively post race party featured music by Mick and the Ultras, Michelob Ultra from Bealer Wholesale, bbq sandwiches courtesy of Jim n' Nick's, Great Harvest Bread, Bruegger's bagels, bananas from Reid's and Harris Teeter as well as water and Powerade from Coca Cola.  A Taste of Finlandia was successful once again as well, as close to 200 runners participated, sampling bloody mary's and screwdrivers from 5 area restaurants as well as 5 bbq teams.  Town Tavern won the Bloody Mary competition and Tavern on the Tracks won the Screwdriver competition.  The Childress Klein YMCA allowed runners to shower so they could go back out and enjoy Blues, Brews and BBQ with their family and friends.  A special thanks to NARI as our presenting sponsor and Center City Partners for all their support.  Buy the 2009 t-shirt online now at www.hogjog.org.

YSPN

The Young Sports Professionals Network of Charlotte has hosted two events in the past quarter. First of all, a Night in the Park was a casual event including volleyball and dinner sponsored by Bojangles'. Not only was this a fun evening at Freedom Park, but it allowed for valuable networking for those in attendance.
Our most recent YSPN event, River Jam with YSPN, took place at the U.S. National Whitewater Center during the Thursday night River Jam music concert. Cunningham & Co. sponsored the networking event on the terrace and spoke to the young sports professionals about mortgages for first-time home buyers. We look forward to more events in the near future.
