NEED SPORTS?

The Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship is coming to Charlotte in 2010 & 2011!
Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship
The ACC Football Championship will be decided in the Queen City as the ACC awarded the 2010 and 2011 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship games to Charlotte. The games will be played in beautiful Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers.

Charlotte is located in the heart of the Atlantic Coast Conference, with eight of the twelve ACC schools located within 300 miles.

Charlotte has hosted a number of college football games. Most notably the annual Meineke Car Care Bowl, which matches the ACC vs. Big East and has averaged over 60,000 fans over the past six years. This past August, Charlotte hosted the East Carolina vs. Virginia Tech season opener in front of a sellout crowd.

The success of these games is a true indication that Charlotte is a college football market.

"The buzz that the Meineke Car Care Bowl has created over the years with their season ticket base along with the proximity of the schools, Charlotte being in the heart of ACC country, will make it much easier for fans to make the trip to support their team for the ACC Championship," said Steve Swetoha, the championship game executive director.
Already thousands of fans have visited the ACC website to request information and sign up for a priority list for tickets. Don't miss your chance to be a part of ACC Football history!

If you are interested in signing up for our presale ticket event later this summer please go to www.accfootballchampionship.com.  For anyone interested in volunteering or helping on one of our many ticket sales committees please contact Steve Swetoha at steve.swetoha@accfootballcharlotte.com.  Or by calling Steve directly at 704-374-3722.

Greetings!

Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director
Executive Director This time last year, I wrote about the fantastic run of sporting events we had just experienced, as the Queen City had just played host to three major collegiate basketball tournaments within a one month period. We were all exhausted, yet we were proud to have been a part of the local "machine" that allows our Region to be able to take on such worthwhile causes. And, while the pace has not been quite so hectic this year, we nevertheless have been busy and look forward to the rest of 2009 and to what lies ahead for 2010.

In January, we celebrated our 10th anniversary of Fight Night for Kids presented by The Charlotte Bobcats, an event that has produced almost $1,000,000 for local children's charities. We also celebrated the legacy of Humpy Wheeler, a true Charlotte hero; we were a witness to CIAA basketball history as we watched both men's and women's teams from Johnson C. Smith University win their championships, which were played for the fourth consecutive year at Time Warner Cable Arena; and, the A-10 Women's Basketball Tournament took place at Halton Arena on the UNC Charlotte campus and was won by the Lady 49ers. . .and that's just the first quarter of the year!

Over the next few months, we can look forward to:  the USA  Pee-Wee Hockey Nationals at the Extreme Ice Center; great college golf featuring local favorites Belmont Abbey, Davidson and Charlotte at The Palisades Collegiate Golf Classic; world class equestrian competition at the Charlotte Jumper Classic and the Queen's Cup Steeplechase; professional bass fishing at Lake Norman as the Walmart FLW National Guard Open returns to our Region; the PGA's Quail Hollow Championship; NASCAR's Pit Crew Challenge, All Star Race and Coca Cola 600; "River Roar", the Region's only corporate raft race at the US National Whitewater Center; world-class swimming competition at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center as Charlotte UltraSwim features Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps; and finally the State Games of North Carolina, in and around the Charlotte Region in June.

As for 2010 and beyond, we are very excited about Charlotte's choice as Host City for the ACC Football Championship game to be played at Bank of America Stadium next year and in 2011. And there are more events in the works, as you might expect.
Our job is to work with our strategic partners to bring new sporting events to our Region, events that you will want to attend and support. Even in this tough economic environment, you can rest assured we are up to the task. At our "Member Appreciation Night" which was held recently at BlackFinn American Saloon, in the heart of the Center City, we wanted to show our heart-felt thanks to those who help us and  for all they do for us. Although a small gesture on our part, it was meant to say that, especially in these stressful times, we know how fortunate we are to have them (and you) as part of the Sports Commission "team".
Congratulations to...

4th Annual
River Roar
Friday, June 5th, the rivalry continues, as the 4th annual River Roar takes place at the US National Whitewater Center.  This event has been a success every year due to the number corporate teams that come out and take to the rapids. Their excitement and competitive spirit make this event an enjoyable experience for everyone that participates. This year's event looks to be no exception as we have taken River Roar to an all new level. For the same price as previous years, a raft purchase now includes rock climbing and plunges down the all-new zip line. River Roar is a great opportunity for team building as well as employee appreciation. For more information regarding the event, sponsorships, or raft sales please contact, Chris Raynor via phone (704) 688-8167 or email chris.raynor@charlottesports.org.

Atlantic-10 Championships at UNC Charlotte
Charlotte 49ers
For the first time in school history, the Charlotte 49ers women's basketball program won the Atlantic-10 (A-10) tournament and went to the big dance. This was the 49ers second trip to the NCAA tournament, the first was in 2003 with an at-large bid.

Charlotte coach Karen Aston said "I am really thrilled for our players and coaching staff they really wanted to win this Championship and make the NCAA Tournament. Our team paid the price all season with their hard work and they have been rewarded with a conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Our program has been on the verge for a few years and we have now taken the next step."

Congratulations to Coach Aston and her team on a great season.

CIAA Men's & Women's Tournaments
This year's showcase of the CIAA Basketball Tournaments was a huge success! Alumni, current students, parents, and fans all congregated in Charlotte's Center City for the long weekend in February. The excitement in the Time Warner Cable Arena was phenomenal! The bowl was packed, the concourse was full of vendors, and more importantly, the games were uber competitive!
Congratulations to Coaches Steve Joyner and Vanessa Taylor of Johnson C. Smith for their success on the court as both the Men's and Women's teams won the Championship titles.
