Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director
"Thank you. . . thank you. . . thank you" are familiar words around these parts, ever since Jerry Richardson uttered this phrase to all those who supported his effort to land the Panthers NFL franchise years ago. His excitement and heart-felt appreciation could not have been expressed more eloquently, and everyone heard him loud and clear.
Now, especially at this time of year, I want to say the same to the Sports Commission's numerous supporters and friends, who make possible the many things we do to earn your trust and well wishes:
Our Corporate Members and Team Players make our jobs so much easier and fulfilling with their continuous support as we strive to fulfill our Mission of improving everyone's quality of life through sports. Our Board and Committee members give us the proper amount of direction and advice to continue our drive to fulfill our Vision as the focal point of the business of sports in our Region. Our many valued Community Partners work with us and help sponsor the events we have created and those other events of which we are fortunate to be a part. Our "teams"...professional, collegiate, amateur of all skills and levels. . . make Charlotte and the surrounding Region one of the country's best for games and events of all kinds. In addition, these same organizations make us all proud with their dedication and caring attitude to the many needs of the less fortunate in our area. Our Region's leaders continue to amaze us all with their dedication to make our community the best it can be for everyone who call Charlotte home as well as for our visitors. . .
Back to Mr. Richardson for a moment. . . as we all realize, he epitomizes what we mean when we think of someone who puts others first and helps so many in our community. Please keep him in your thoughts as he fights his biggest battle yet to get back to 100% in 2009.

2008 In Review
HOOP DAYS in Charlotte was a tremendous success by any measure. Three major basketball tournaments occurred over a five week time frame, utilizing many of the same personnel from many agencies for each. Events included: CIAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments, ACC Men's Basketball Championship, and the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The CRSC played a big role in each LOC with varying responsibilities. The CRSC staff coordinated volunteers, communicated plans and details to city departments, coordinated the ACC Legends Brunch, provided marketing/public relations and financial assistance to each. Our efforts, while behind-the-scenes, paid big dividends which we hope will lead Charlotte to many other events of this type. FIGHT NIGHT FOR KIDS FOUNDATION recognized all grant recipients at the YWCA Central Carolinas on April 11, 2008. The breakfast was attended by representatives of the 18 individual organizations selected by the Fight Night for Kids Steering Committee. The total amount of money distributed in 2008 was $120,000, bringing the nine year total to $985,000 in funds granted to over 50 Charlotte area children's charities in that time. The breakfast also provided a great opportunity for the recipients to learn more about Fight Night for Kids and a great chance for networking among the groups. BASS FEDERATION NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and WAL-MART FLW TOUR/NATIONAL GUARD OPEN were both a success. The event had outstanding teamwork among our region's sports partners that includes Visit Charlotte, Visit Lake Norman, Mecklenburg County Park & Rec, and the Charlotte Sports Commission. FLW Outdoors has recently announced that these organizations along with the Cabarrus County CVB will host the 2009 WalMart FLW Tour-National Guard Open again next April 23-26. Mark your calendars! 2008 USA CANOE/KAYAK OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS for Whitewater Slalom were held at the US National Whitewater Center over the weekend of April 25-27, 2008 in front of a crowd of over 15,000. This event was accompanied by the Continental Qualifier and Canadian Team Trials, making this a truly international event. NBC had a multi-camera video shoot during the weekend which produced a one-hour show that aired nationally on MSNBC. The CRSC provided many services in the production and promotion of the event in everything from finance, marketing and logistics! CAROLINA PANTHERS ANNUAL COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF LUNCHEON held on Friday, August 22nd served over 1200 fans at the Convention Center. A great lunch was enjoyed by all as Coach Fox, Jake Delhomme, Muhsin Muhammad, Jordan Gross, Jon Beason and Chris Harris told the crowd how the team was ready for this season. Proceeds generated from the event were in the amount of $55,000 and went to Classroom Central. A check presentation was made on the field before the Panthers-Bears game. We have all enjoyed this 2008 season, so reserve a tables for 2009 and begin the support for next season! THE INAUGURAL HOG JOG 5K was held Saturday, September 13th in Uptown Charlotte. The CRSC associated the race with CCCP's Blues, Brews and BBQ. Over 700 runners participated helping to create a solid foundation for next 2009. The excitement surrounding this inaugural event included a post race party with music by Mick and the Ultras, a bloody mary contest, free "slider" sandwiches from Black Finn, complimentary massages by students from South Piedmont Community College and free beer from Bealer Wholesale. The 2nd Annual Hog Jog will be September 12, 2009! Save the Date and Get Hoofin'! |

Also from 2008...
- NCAA D-II Golf Super Regional hosted by the Point Lake and Golf Club featuring sixteen of the best college golf teams in the Southeast. Five of the teams, including host Belmont Abbey, won the opportunity to advance to the NCAA D-II National Tournament, which was recently held in Houston, TX. Mike Mistler represented the CRSC as the Tournament Director.
- The Wachovia Championship was a great success with an estimated 35,000 spectators a day. Since its inauguration in 2003, the Wachovia Championship has raised over $7.5 million for charity.
- The Inaugural Mile High Affair was hosted at Charlotte Douglas International Airport by Brian Vickers and Ascension Aviation. Proceeds benefit Fight Night for Kids Foundation and the Levine Children's Hospital.
- 3rd Annual River Roar held at the US National Whitewater Center was a great time. Speedway Motorsports Inc. won the Corporate Raft Race and will return to defend the title... Mark your calendar for June 5th to participate!
- CRSC High School Team of the Year Award presented to South Pointe (Rock Hill) High School, in only its third year of varsity football. The presentation was made live on WBTV's Football Friday Night with Delano Little and Danielle Trotta on Friday, December 12. Since 1997, the Sports Commission has awarded this trophy to the Charlotte area team that best exemplifies the outstanding characteristics of hard work, dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Led by Head Coach Bobby Carroll, the Stallions finished 14-0, won the South Carolina AAAA-II State Championship, and were ranked in the top 6 in three national polls.
