Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director
There was an article recently in Carolina Golf, written by Arnold Palmer, in which he talked at length about his love of the Carolinas.
Of special interest were his reflections as a "Yankee coming South from his Pennsylvania home,". . . so he could play golf 12 months out of the year. . . his college campus and teammates at Wake Forest were extremely inviting. . . and much more.
However, the thing that he says stuck with him the most was the friendliness and hospitality of "the people down there." Furthermore, during his time in Charlotte, as a professional golfer and businessman, he made friends and developed partnerships which are some of his most coveted still today.
We are definitely the beneficiaries of these attributes so well described by arguably the best, most famous and beloved golfer of all time.
Whether great courses for golf or exceptional and, in some cases, venerable racetracks for NASCAR competitions, the Carolinas can be counted among the best in the world for sports settings, events and opportunities. Take the Queen City, for example: the NFL, NBA and great minor league sports. . . numerous collegiate teams and events. . . a litany of amateur sporting events and places for all of us to take part of and even compete.
All of these only scratch the surface of what we are fortunate to ace in our backyard when it comes to sports. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of your choice, there is something for everyone! And, as Arnie so eloquently described, you'll be greeted with a smile!

Beijing Olympics - Special Report

There was a Charlotte Sports Commission connection to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games! I was fortunate enough to act as Media Relations Director for USA Canoe/Kayak from March to September of 2008, including working for the team in Beijing from 8/5 - 8/26/08. Without the help of the entire staff and board of directors of the CRSC, this would not have been possible, My "pre-games" work encompassed taking athletes through the USOC Media Summit in Chicago for interviews and press conferences with national and international print and electronic media. Then to Oklahoma City to manage media at the Olympic Trials for Flatwater Sprint and the same duties at the Slalom Trials at Charlotte's own US National Whitewater Center. Then, once the team was named, I coordinated interviews with the athletes and wrote the media guide for the Games. Once in Beijing, I was housed with other press officers at Beijing Normal University, home of the USOC's High Performance Center (HPC). The HPC also housed several teams (Field Hockey, Boxing, Wrestling and others), coaches, USOC staff and recording staff that taped competition for coaches use. The first HPC was used at the Athens Games, but this facility was much more complete. Swimming, track and field and basketball were just a few of the teams that used the HPC. On the media side, the USOC maintains a full service press office at the Main Press Center (MPC) at all Olympic Games. The MPC itself was run by BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee) and is a very large facility that hosts all international print media and photographers. It was complete with food court, medical, banking, post office, store, dry cleaning and even a barber! Our USOC office served as a hub of work and communication for all press officers at the Games. The Canoe/Kayak venue is 1 hour NE of Beijing which translated into a 3-hour round trip commute for me daily on one of the hundreds of busses that BOCOG arranged for the run of the games. It was interesting being able to see the Chinese countryside which was filled with farms (corn everywhere!). The Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoe Park was built specifically for the Games and Chinese Team training. Unlike the US National Whitewater Center, the Shunyi facility will not see much (if any) public use. Unfortunately, the USA Canoe/Kayak team had no medalists, but did have a sixth and eighth place finish in the finals which bodes well for the sport's future. The athletes were fantastic to be around as were the coaches and trainers that comprised the team. I would like to once again thank Jeff Beaver, Mike Crum and David Yarborough for their support in making this experience possible in addition to Mike, Chris and Caroline. Without all their help, there's no way this would have been possible! |

On Saturday, September 13 the Sports Commission held the Inaugural "Hog Jog 5K" in Uptown Charlotte in association with Blues, Brews and BBQ. Over 700 runners participated, helping to create a solid foundation for next year. There was a lot of excitement surrounding this first year event and the post race party that included music by Mick and the Ultras, a Bloody Mary contest, free "slider" sandwiches from BlackFinn, complimentary massages by students from South Piedmont Community College and free beer from Bealer Wholesale.

Circle September 12, 2009 on your calendars for the 2nd Annual Hog Jog.
We also want to thank Keffer Volkswagon, Fifth Third Bank, Corder Philips, Adams Outdoor, Endurance Magazine, SMI Properties, Reid's Fine Foods, Great Harvest Bread Co., Coca Cola, and Sharpe Images.
The Charlotte City Amateur Golf Championship celebrated its 50th Anniversary August 15th - 17th, as the best players in the Region competed for this coveted crown. The 1958 winner, Bill Williamson, struck the ceremonial 1st ball, and the 2008 winner was Ron Kirkpatrick at 5 under par. Interestingly, the 1958 and 2008 first rounds were both contested at Charlotte Country Club Carolina Panthers Kickoff Luncheon On Friday, August 22 over 1200 fans welcomed the Panthers at the Convention Center as they readied for the 2008 season. A great lunch was enjoyed by all as Coach Fox, Jake Delhomme, Muhsin Muhammad, Jordan Gross, Jon Beason and Chris Harris told the crowd how the team was preparing for this season.
Proceeds generated from the event totaled $55,000, to benefit Classroom Central. A check presentation was made on the field by Mike Mistler, and his daughter Paige, before the Panthers-Bears home football game. Please visit the website if you are interested in purchasing a table for next year's luncheon.
