Message From Jeff Beaver, Executive Director
Well, they said it couldn't be done or, at least, that the various Local Organizing Committees would be hard pressed to successfully host three straight very significant collegiate basketball tournaments in Charlotte within a 33 day time frame, but the results indicate, that as in the past, "Team Charlotte" was once again up to the task!
The CIAA Men's and Women's tournaments kicked off the aptly named HOOP DAYS and was topped off with our very own JCSU men's team winning their championship. It has been recently reported that the total economic impact realized for the Region is approximately $30,000,000; and, the icing on the cake is the news that the conference has decided to return to the QueenCity in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Many doubters scoffed at the idea that we could "handle" the crowds for the 55th Annual ACC Men's Tournament later in the month. However, after perhaps one of the most successful and entertaining events ever held by the ACC, the conference has already expressed its gratitude for the efforts put forth and the results produced by all those involved. We hope they will be back sooner rather than later.
The 2008 NCAA Division I Men's East Regional was our 3rd straight event, and all indications point to the fact that the likelihood that we will again host this great tournament is now a much better possibility than ever.
The common theme throughout the entire month of March was "teamwork, teamwork, teamwork!" Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte 49ers Athletics, the CRVA, CATS, and especially Bobcats Sports & Entertainment, naming just a few, are some of the key organizations which worked so hard to get things done in such an efficient and professional manner. It is always an honor to play a small part in such a large undertaking to maintain Charlotte's tradition as "the city where champions are crowned." |

Congratulations to...
Queens University runner Daniel Kanyaruhuru won the gold in the 5,000m race at the 2008 NCAA D-II Indoor T&F Championships in March.
Butler High's Spencer Adams won the 60m hurdles at the National Scholastic Indoor T&F Championships in New York.
JCSU's Leford Green won the 400m and the Golden Bull's Shermaine Williams won the 60m hurdles at the NCAA D-II Indoor T&F Championships in March.
Steve Joyner was recognized for his incredible record and his unselfish work at Johnson C Smith by having the floor of Brayboy Gymnasium named in his honor as Stephen Joyner Sr. Court.
Vicki Hamilton
Congratulations to Vicki Hamilton, Athletic Director for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, on being inducted into the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame. Her hard work and continued efforts toward improving athletics in schools has not gone unnoticed. She served on the steering committee for the ACC Basketball Championships and has an astonishing list of achievements including: NC Athletic Director of the Year (2005) and Carolinas' Athlete of the Year Humanitarian Award. She is such a humble and outstanding individual and we are glad to have been a part of the induction ceremony. Thanks for all your work Ms. Hamilton and again, congratulations on your induction!

Inside Hoop Days
Hoop Days in Charlotte was a tremendous success by any measure. Three major basketball tournaments occurred over a five week time frame, utilizing many of the same personnel from many agencies for each. The CRVA and Bobcats Arena staff did a wonderful job of hosting the games in the arena, which is where it is most critical. In addition, the three Local Organizing Committees (LOC's) took on a wide array of responsibilities to make sure the tournament hosts, student-athletes, fans and city staff had the information and planning necessary to make the events fun and run smoothly. The CRSC played a big role in each LOC with varying responsibilities. The CRSC staff coordinated volunteers, communicated plans and details to city departments, provided media, marketing, public relations and financial assistance to each. We like to say that we "connect the dots" in many of our daily activities, and this could not have been more true or useful than in these 5 weeks. Our efforts, while behind-the-scenes, paid big dividends which we hope will lead Charlotte to many other events of this type. We're excited about our role in improving Charlotte's already great resume in hosting events of all types!
ACC Legends Brunch 2008
On Saturday, March 15th, over 750 people came to the Westin Hotel to honor 12 true Legends of the ACC. The following Legends were honored and regaled the crowd with stories from their playing and coaching days: Bill Curley, Boston College; Elden Campbell, Clemson; Mike Gminski, Duke; Charlie Ward, Florida State; Kenny Anderson, Georgia Tech; Lefty Driesell, Maryland; Tim James, Miami; Dean Smith, North Carolina; Lorenzo Charles, NC State; John Crotty, Virginia; Glen Combs, Virginia Tech; and Len Chappell, Wake Forest. Mike Hogwood, Bobby Cremins and Tim Brant did a great job as emcees. Several of the Legends stayed after the event and graciously signed autographs for those in attendance. |
