Neversink Mountain Hike
1PM
Join us as we explore Reading's Mountain. Neversink Mountain enthusiasts, Paul Druzba and Larry Lloyd will show us our properties that have been protected by the Berks County Conservancy, and will discuss the rich history of this 900 acre treasure. The Conservancy has been purchasing land on the mountain for several years in an effort to preserve the mountain for public enjoyment. Donations collected the day of the walk are $3 for members/$5 for non-members. We will meet at 27th Street and Fairview Avenue. For detailed directions and map, click here.

Schuylkill Action Network (SAN) Honors Students
The Schuylkill Action Network honored students from three schools in southeastern Pennsylvania this week for their efforts to protect source water in the Schuylkill River watershed. Two of the awards went to schools in the Berks County area.

The goal of the SAN Educational Sector Award is to recognize students and teachers for their leadership in protecting sources of drinking water in the Schuylkill River watershed.

  • Kutztown Area Middle School, Kutztown: Students helped the Borough of Kutztown construct and maintain the Sacony Trail adjacent to the school, plant native vegetation, and wrote nature guides and essays. The Berks County Conservancy has been working with Kutztown teachers and students with their projects. In Fall 2009, we celebrated the completion of the Sacony Trail with the students.
  • Reading Area Community College, Reading: Students developed a year-long campus campaign called Get Your Fill! that focused attention on protecting municipal drinking water supplies by distributing 3,000 refillable drinking water bottles and bottle fillers on campus water fountains.
Schuylkill Action Network's (SAN) Agricultural Project Tour
This week, the Berks County Conservancy and Berks County Conservation District led an agricultural tour of Berks County to the Berks County Planning Commission, local Environmental Advisory Committees, and Department of Environmental Protection and Environmental Protection Agency representatives. The bus tour visited various SAN farm projects in Berks County.

Highlights included SAN projects with streambank fencing, cattle crossings, and plantings. The tour showcased many water-quality improvements in agricultural areas of Berks County.
Where is THIS Special Place?
