Treating Adult Survivors of Sexual Assault:  Understanding the Issue and a Three-Stage Model for Use in Clinical Practice

Boulder, Colorado (July 30, 2008)

Janine D'Anniballe, Ph.D.

In Colorado, research has shown that as many as one in four women and one in seventeen men are victims of sexual violence at some time in their lives.   With these statistics the chances are high that mental health professionals will have sexual assault survivors as clients.  To that end, Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA) is offering a specialized training about how to treat adult survivors of sexual assault.  Through this program,  participants will gain a more comprehensive understanding of sexual assault and clinical interventions to use.

The training agenda will cover:

  • Overview of sexual assault, including laws, forensic evidence collection and reporting requirements
  • Psychobiology of trauma
  • Treatment and intervention strategies
  • Providing culturally competent services to survivors

This training is ideal for therapists, counselors, victim service providers, clinical interns, mental health professionals and clinicians in private practice.

The program will be co-presented by Janine D'Anniballe, Ph.D. and Marti Hopper, Ph.D.  Dr.  D'Anniballe is MESA's Executive Director.  She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee and has specialized in the area of sexual abuse and trauma since 1993. Over the past eight years, Dr. D'Anniballe has presented on sexual assault issues at regional and national conferences.  As a licensed psychologist, Dr. D'Anniballe has a private practice in Boulder with an emphasis in the treatment of psychological trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and has testified as an expert witness in sexual assault cases throughout the Denver-Metro area.  Dr. Hopper is MESA's Prevention Education Director.  She holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from University of Cincinnati. Since 1999, Dr. Hopper has directed MESA's sexual assault prevention education programs, including the Peer Education Program, youth education and adult education. Three years ago, Dr. Hopper spearheaded the groundbreaking Men's Prevention Education Program (men teaching other men and boys about ending sexual violence).

Feedback from past participants:

"This is THE training I've been looking for as a clinician that works with older adults from the general population.  This topic comes up rather frequently."

"It was good to see a trainer who could model client's non-verbal language - it added a lot to the stories."

"Neurobiological piece on trauma and psychology was particularly interesting and useful."

"This has been the best, most specific but not overwhelming information."

"Thank you so much.  It was so informative and well presented."

About Moving to End Sexual Assault

MESA was formed in 1972 in response to the abduction, rape and shooting of two young girls.  The organization was originally called Humans Against Rape and Molestation (HARM) and then Boulder County Rape Crisis Team.  In 2001, the agency's name was changed to Moving to End Sexual Assault in order to better reflect the organization's mission - "We are moving to end sexual assault and the suffering it causes in our community.  Every person has the right to live free of sexual assault.  We challenge all forms of oppression and recognize their connection to sexual violence."  MESA staff and volunteers work to achieve the mission statement by providing treatment for sexual assault and by providing prevention education. Moving to End Sexual Assault is a team of the Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties, Inc., a private, non-profit organization.
