View a powerful photographic exhibit at performance of Vagina Monologues
It began as a fundraising idea: hold a silent auction with abstract images of the cast in the nude but it ended as an experience that has changed the lives of the women involved. A woman's body image is dramatically affected by societal pressures. With images of Barbie, Super Models and celebrities, women and girls are told what is an acceptable body. Sexual assault can destroy a woman's positive view of their body. And friends and loved ones are equally impacted by sexual assault with the fear that it might happen to them. The experience of the Empowerment Photo shoots left the VDay Boulder feeling proud and empowered.
I know you've heard this tons today, but this was probably one of the biggest transformations in my life ! ... I really feel liberated and with the image that I chose, I hope that people feel the same when they see it.
This photo shoot was one of the best experiences I've had when it comes to self expression. It put me in an unshakable good mood for days...hell, I'm still smiling about it. It's something I'll never forget because it gave me an opportunity to show myself some love and acknowledge how amazing this body and mind are
Empowerment will be the first phase of a photography project about sexual assault survivors. Local photographers Julie Afflerbaugh and Peggy Dyer will be leading the project, with the guidance of Moving to End Sexual Assault's (MESA) Development Director Deirdre Moynihan.
To preview the Empowerment Exhibit you can attend the benefit production of The Vagina Monologues at the Boulder Theater on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 8 pm
About Julie Afflerbaugh: After attending photography school in Santa Barbara, California and mastering her technique, Julie Afflerbaugh Photography was born. About Peggy Dyer: Peggy's images are visually stunning and capture both the raw emotion of the moment and the fleeting energy of her subjects. She is published nationally in Life Magazine, The Wall Street Journal and many trade publications. Her art is housed in private collections throughout the world. Working with Peggy has been described as having a butterfly fluttering around capturing delicious slices of your life. "I strive to bring a fresh perspective to each project I undertake. I enjoy getting to know my clients and finding ways to bring their style and personality to my work creating highly stylized documentary images that are a blend of high fashion and editorial journalism. I work very hard to capture my subjects as they truly are with as little posing as possible, striving to convey a relaxed style that is natural and unique." www.peggydyer.com

About Moving to End Sexual Assault
MESA was formed in 1972 in response to the abduction, rape and shooting of two young girls. The organization was originally called Humans Against Rape and Molestation (HARM) and then Boulder County Rape Crisis Team. In 2001, the agency's name was changed to Moving to End Sexual Assault in order to better reflect the organization's mission - "We are moving to end sexual assault and the suffering it causes in our community. Every person has the right to live free of sexual assault. We challenge all forms of oppression and recognize their connection to sexual violence." MESA staff and volunteers work to achieve the mission statement by providing treatment for sexual assault and by providing prevention education. Moving to End Sexual Assault is a team of the Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties, Inc., a private, non-profit organization.
