FOOD, FOOD, FOOD!

If you really want to make a friend, go to someone's house and eat with him... The people who give you their food give you their heart. - Cesar Chavez

The MESA volunteers contribute over 16,000 hours annually.  That is not only the equivalent to 8.3 full-time employees but quite simply it is a whole lot of hours!     With the support of many local community restaurants we are able to provide meals for them during trainings and throughout the year.   It is an invaluable contribution to MESA.   Please visit these wonderful restaurants and thank them for their contribution to MESA

Equine Therapy at MESA

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a (hu)man.  ~Winston Churchill

As you may know, MESA hosts an Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) group, Wild at Heart, for sexual assault survivors.  EAP isHorse psychotherapy with the addition of a horse, or in this case a group of horses.  The incorporation of horses in therapy provides an experiential method for growth and learning that goes beyond traditional methods.  The groups are led by Jackie Ashley, MA, LPC, ADTR, who is a body-based psychotherapist, a registered Dance Movement Therapist, and holds a Level 1 certification in EAP.

MESA has hosted two support groups and plans to host more groups starting this spring.  A group of approximately six sexual assault survivors meets weekly for eight weeks at an outdoor barn in Longmont where magic occurs in the arena.

As part of the group, Jackie facilitates the spontaneous crafting of a group poem, where each participant gives a line or so.  Perhaps we can see the effectiveness of this approach through these words from the participants themselves:

Aloneness

Herd holds all,

Magical, powerful, expansive space,

Quiet introspection,

Big velvety lips!  Oh the muscles!

Overwhelming peace and

a touch of laughter enters.

           Humans are pretty O.K.

VDay Boulder VDAY Boulder

The Vagina Monologues are coming to Boulder! A group of strong and beautiful women from the community will be producing and performing in Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues.

What is V-Day?
V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.

Through V-Day campaigns, a group of Boulder Community women will produce and perform 3 benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" to raise awareness and funds for Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA). This is one of the over 3700 V-Day benefit events are taking place, produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls

Moving to End Sexual Assault is a non-profit organization founded in 1972 in response to the abduction, rape and shooting of two young girls.  In February of 2001, the organization's name was changed to Moving to End Sexual Assault to better reflect the scope of the organization's work in Boulder County-providing support to sexual assault victims and addressing the societal conditions that contribute to sexual violence. Moving to End Sexual Assault is a team of the Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties, Inc., a private, non-profit organization.
