Lots of Reasons to Love Wood Floors
by Lisbeth Calandrino

It is amazing variation in color is available to the home owner who wants beautiful wood floors. Not only are there numerous choices of woods, but manufacturers have dramatically improved the finishes on factory finished hardwood floors. Choices of wood floors today include not only maple, oak or pine, but also exotic species such as distressed and reclaimed woods.
Years ago the only way to care for your wood floors was to wax them, often by hand. The new protective coatings, often urethane embedded with aluminum oxide particles, dramatically increases the scratch resistance of wood flooring.
Wood floors are not hard to take care of but should be treated with respect. Protect them by sweeping or vacuuming before using a liquid floor cleaner to prevent scratches. This prevents the floors from being scratched while cleaning. It is also recommended that you put a walk-off mat in front of the door so that sand and gritty particles will not be tracked in from the outside. Because of the natural softness of wood, it should be noted that wood is still likely to scratch and dent. This should be considered part of the beauty and character of the floor as well as the inherent nature of wood.
