11/15 - Commissioning of JCU Students and Administrators traveling to Ignatian Family Teach-In and SOA Protest
|
November 16, 1989, six Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her
daughter were dragged by Salvadoran military soldiers from the Jesuit residence
at the University of Central America in El Salvador, and assassinated.
The Jesuits, through their teaching, research, and ministry,
had been promoting social justice and an improved standard of living for the
economically poor of El Salvador.
Many of the Salvadoran soldiers who were responsible for the
deaths of the Jesuits and their companions received training at a U.S. military
training school now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security
Cooperation (formerly the U.S. Army School of the Americas) located at Ft.
Benning in Columbus, Georgia.
This Sunday (11/15) a t the 10 PM mass, we will commission 21 students and administrators who will travel to Georgia to attend a gathering of students from Jesuits universities and high schools from across the country (Ignatian Family Teach-In) and a protest of the former School of the Americas to advocate for U.S.
policy toward Latin America that focuses less on military training and
intervention. Following mass, people will be invited to place a cross representing a victim of human rights abuses in Latin America on the fence located on the quad.
