| JEWISH HOLIDAY - YOM KIPPUR |
This year the Jewish holy day Yom Kippur (the "Day of Atonement") begins at sundown on October 8th. This is the holiest day of the Jewish year and refers to the annual observance of "returning to God with your whole heart." Yom Kippur is a day of prayer and fasting (no work; no food, drink, smoke, or other sensual pleasures for the 24 hours, sundown to sundown). By setting aside physical desires and other distractions, the fast allows Jews to concentrate on prayer and deepening their relationships with God.
Yom Kippur is the day to atone for sins between humans and God. In Jewish thought, this is not possible if one has not already atoned for any sins against other persons. Thus, observant Jews spend the octave between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur seeking reconciliation with anyone they might have wronged, asking for forgiveness and making whatever recompense is possible. Yom Kippur helps Jews to start off their new year truly new, as individuals and as a community in relationship to God. We offer prayers in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters during these holy days. For more information click here. |
