MUSLIM MONTH OF RAMADAN BEGINS
Muslim Crescent MoonOn September 2nd Muslims began Ramadan which is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims fast and abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from the break of dawn to sunset. Fasting (along with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of the "five pillars" of Islam. On October 1, 2008 the end of Ramadan will be marked by communal prayers called "Eid ul-Fitr," or "Feast of the Fast-Breaking."  There are an estimated 7 million Muslims in America and 1.2 billion worldwide.  We offer prayers in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters during this holy time.
AVAILABLE NOW - Low Gluten Communion Hosts
Some people may be unable to receive communion because they have celiacs (an inherited condition which results in damage to the stomach if wheat is ingested).  The substance in wheat which causes the problem is gluten.  A new very low gluten (.01%) host has been developed by the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.  This recipe has been approved by the U.S. Catholic Bishops for use in communion.

If you have celiacs and would like to receive communion in the form of low gluten bread, please check first with your physician that the .01% gluten will not adversely affect your health.  Then, let us know that you want to receive this host and in general, when you are likely to attend (daily Sunday 6:00 or 10:00 pm).

At each mass we will consecrate one or two low-gluten hosts (or more if we have more need) and they will be kept in a special small container (ciborium) at the altar and then later in the tabernacle.   At the time of the Lamb of God, please come up to the altar on the server side of the altar (facing the altar that would be the right) to receive your host from the priest.  This will ensure that your host is not mingled with the wheat hosts.

Click here to learn more about low gluten hosts. If you have any questions or other concerns, please contact Gail Roussey (
groussey@jcu.edu).
