| THIS SUNDAY - RCIA/CONFIRMATION |
|
This Sunday two of our students will be participating in the Rite of Election at our 6:00 pm Mass as part of the RCIA process. At this Rite, which is always held at the beginning of Lent, they will "elect" to continue their journey toward receiving the sacraments during the Easter season. Please pray for Carolann Kunka who will be preparing for baptism, confirmation and Eucharist, and for Anna Genova, who will be preparing for confirmation and eucharist.
Two of our students, Ashley Boone, and Megan Goldfarb are pictured here as they were confirmed by Bishop Richard Lennon, Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland at a mass here in St. Francis Chapel on January 20th. To see photos from the 1/20/08 Confirmation Mass click here.

What makes these roses fair trade?
Buying Fair Trade Certified flowers ensures that growers meet strict environmental and social standards. A Fair Trade Flower meets that Fair Trade standards of any other Fair Trade product (such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and sugar). This means growers and farmers are given a living wage and fair labor conditions. In addition Fair Trade certification ensures direct trade, democratic and transparent business practices, community development, and environmental sustainability.
A portion of each purchase of Fair Trade Flowers goes directly to a community development fund call a joint body, which decides how to use the funds to better the surrounding community. Funds can go towards housing, scholarships, and health clinics.
The roses that we will be selling here at JCU were purchases directly from a Cooperative in Kenya.

| Interested in the enviornment and spirituality? Come be part of something special over spring break! |
Campus Ministry is looking for one or two individuals to fill open spots in our environmental issue focused experience to Mt. Vernon, Kentucky over spring break. The experience will allow students to learn about human impact on the environment and what can be done to help our Earth while having a positive impact through direct service. The trip will also help students develop a relationship between being concerned for the environment and spirituality, through daily prayer and reflection.
Participants would be required to attend the remaining preparation meetings where the group learns about the issues and gets to know each other. In addition, we ask that students attempt to live simply during their experience (including staying in a shared living spacing and refraining from the use of alcohol for the week). The cost of the experience is $250 and would need to be paid by the end of March. The experience will depart on the 1st Sunday of Spring Break and return the following Saturday.
Any graduate or undergraduate student interested, should contact Chris Kerr at ckerr@jcu.edu. |

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP - Preparing for the March Primary |
Why Does the Church Teach About Issues Affecting Public Policy?
The Church's obligation to participate in shaping the moral character of society is a requirement of our faith, a part of the mission given to us by Jesus Christ. Faith helps us see more clearly the truth about human life and dignity that we also understand through human reason. As people of both faith and reason, Catholics are called to bring truth to political life and to practice Christ's commandment to "love one another" (Jn 13:34). According to Pope Benedict XVI, "charity must animate the entire lives of the lay faithful and therefore also their political activity, lived as 'social charity'" (Encyclical Deus Caritas Est, no. 29).
The United States Constitution protects the right of individual believers and religious bodies to participate and speak out without government interference, favoritism, or discrimination. Civil law should recognize and protect the Church's right and responsibility to participate in society without abandoning our central moral convictions. Our nation's tradition of pluralism is enhanced, not threatened, when religious groups and people of faith bring their convictions into public life. The Catholic community brings to the political dialogue a consistent moral framework and broad experience serving those in need.

| Have time to pray? |
Along with our regular liturgical schedule - there are several other opportunities for folks to gather for prayer:
Every Tuesday and Thursday, we have a group that prays the Rosary after the mass in Rodman chapel. The rosary usually starts around 5:35pm.
On weeknights (Monday through Friday) we have Night Prayer in the St. Francis Chapel at 9pm. Newcomers are always welcome and encouraged to join in!
After the Murphy Mass (Murphy Chapel on Wedsnesdays at 9:30pm), a group stays for about 1/2 hour of Eucharistic Adoration.
