World Meeting of Jesuits Elects New Leader |
|

The Society of Jesus has convened as a General Congregation (GC 35) in Rome to elect a new Superior General and to discuss and discern critical directions for the Jesuits in several areas.
NEW SUPERIOR GENERAL ELECTED
Father Adolfo Nicolas, SJ, has been elected Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Nicolas, 71, has overseen Jesuit operations in east Asia and Oceania since 2004 and spent most of his career in the Far East after being ordained in Tokyo in 1967.
Former Superior General, Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., 79, began his tenure as Superior General in 1983. In 2006, with the permission of Pope Benedict XVI, Fr. Kolvenbach announced his intention to retire.
The following prayer is the official prayer of the Congregation:
Lord in your providence you guided St. Ignatius to found the Society of Jesus. Enrich it, we pray, with gifts of heart, mind and spiritu. Make us all one with you in holiness and love, that we may discern your will and carry it out with constancy and faith. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
As a way of supporting the Jesuits during this time, JCU will maintain a lighted candle in the Lady Chapel of St. Francis for the duration of GC 35.
