| World Meeting of Jesuits to Elect New Leader |
|
General Congregation (GC) 35 begins January 2008
Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., superior general (worldwide leader) of the Jesuits has called for a general congregation which will begin on January 7, 2008 in Rome. Representatives from each of the 91 provinces of Jesuits will send representatives to the meeting. The last general congregation was held in 1995, and prior to that in 1983 when Fr. Kolvenbach was elected.
Electing a new leader
The first order of business for the representatives will be to formally accept Fr. Kolvenbach's resignation. Usually, the superior general is elected for life, but the Jesuits' constitutions allow a superior to step down. In this case Pope Benedict XVI personally approved this way of proceeding. Next there will be presentations on the current state of affairs for the 19,000+ Jesuits and future challenges and possibilities. Then, there will be four days of prayer, conversation, and one-on-one meetings. Politicking is banned, delegates may not campaign for anyone and there are no nominees. The delegates will then gather at Mass followed by an hour of silent prayer, and then the voting begins. 217 priests are chosen by their peers and as electors and cast a vote for the Jesuit they want to lead the order. When a candidate receives a majority of the votes, the election of the 29th successor of St. Ignatius Loyola is over.
Other topics
After the election of a superior general, delegates will continue their work as they consider some of the more than 350 propositions that have been submitted. These proposals may be organized into nine categories: the Jesuit mission today; Jesuit identity; governance; obedience; Jesuit-lay relationships; community life; formation; youth ministry and vocations; and the structure of the Jesuit Refugee Service.
