Remembering Fr. Pedro Arrupe S.J.
Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

Wednesday, November 14th marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pedro Arrupe, SJ.  Fr. Arrupe served as the 28th Superior General (worldwide leader) of the Jesuits from 1965-1983.  Arrupe is perhaps most known for leading the Jesuits to emphasize justice as an essential component of the gospel.  In 1973 he gave a keynote address on educating for justice in which he coined the phrase we now know as "Men and Women for Others".  A popular writing on "falling in love in a quite, absolute final way" is also attributed to Arrupe.  In response to the worldwide refugee crisis Arrupe established the Jesuit Refugee Service in 1980 which continues today to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.  In 1981 he suffered a debilitating stroke and was replaced as Superior General in 1983.  For years he suffered, partially paralyzed and increasingly unable to communicate, until his death in 1991.

Thursday, November 15th
5:05 PM
St. Francis Chapel

On November 16, 1989 the Jesuit martyrs of El Salvador and their two companions were dragged out of their home and violently killed.  The men worked as professors and administrators at the University of Central America (UCA) and were assassinated for speaking out on behalf of the economically poor, the most vulnerable in society.  Thousands of El Salvadoran people died along with them throughout the 10 year civil war that plagued the country.

Following the mass will be a brief commissioning service for those students traveling to Columbus, Georgia to protest the U.S. Army institute formerly known as the "U.S. Army School of the Americas".

Each year a group of John Carroll University students, faculty, and staff travel to Columbus, GA to represent JCU at the Ignatian Family Teach-In and protest calling for the close of the School of the Americas.  To learn more about the group's trip click here.

Join RCIA participants to learn more about the Church Teaching on Social Justice
RCIA RCIA  is a process for students who want to learn more about the Catholic faith and/or receive one or more of the sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation, First Eucharistic).  Our classes are held at 8:00 pm on Sundays, generally in the Campus Ministry Conference Room (formerly the President's Dining Room).

This Sunday, November 11th at the 6:00 pm Mass we will officially welcome those students who have decided to proceed with their discernment about receiving a sacrament of initiation in the Roman Catholic Church.  Our class that night will be taught by Fr. Tom Schubeck and will concern the Church's teaching about social justice.
