What are "All Saints" and "All Souls" Days? |
|
The Solemnity of All Saints is a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics, and all are expected to attend a Eucharistic celebration on that day. Roman Catholics celebrate, on that day, all those saints (known and unknown) who are with God in heaven. This feast was formally instituted in 835, by Pope Gregory IV who moved the celebration from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow's Even or "holy evening." Now that night is known as Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day, which is not a Holy Day of Obligation. On this day Roman Catholics remember all baptized Christians who have died, and pray that they may experience the joy of seeing God in heaven. Click here for more information. |
