A Message from the Principal:

Tuition Assistance
Thank you to all of you who so generously donated to Tuition Assistance at Anchor Ball this year. This year many of you gave to this fund at a time when so many need our help. Due to the current economy, we have had nearly double the applications. I would like to commend you for sharing your gifts with others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
If you missed Anchor Ball and want to know how you can help, please CLICK HERE for more information.

2010-2011 Classroom Placement
As we continue to partner with you to provide a high-quality Catholic education for your child, we are pleased to announce our new method of homeroom placement. We have assessed our placement process and determined that the most effective way to support and facilitate student learning is to glean the information from you, the parent, regarding your child's unique learning needs. Rather than asking you to name a specific teacher, we feel that learning more about your child's learning style and optimum learning environment will better ensure proper placement.
Please CLICK HERE to begin the survey process. The deadline to submit your placement request is Tuesday, June 1st.

Annual Fund

· Haven't been contacted? - Please watch in next week's envelope for communication on how you can fulfill your commitment.  Every pledge get's us one step further!
· Have not turned in your pledge? - In the next month we will be making every effort to close this phase of the campaign to our current Serra families.   Please turn your commitment in, addressed to Mrs. Trudell.  Staff or campaign leadership will be contacting you to see how they can assist with any questions you may have.

Should you have any questions regarding either of these funds, please contact Laurie Beach, Director of Development at ext. 171 or Gina Kerley, Campaign Coordinator at ext 195.

Art Around the World!  K - Second
This summer, come take a trip around the world!  Visit ten countries where famous artists created beautiful works of art!  Each day, the students will visit a different country and learn about a new artist.  The class will then experience the joy and fun of creating a design, using different techniques and materials.  In this class, everyone is an artist!

Math Review 1
Students will review basic math skills such as counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's, identifying and counting coins, using patterns, and solving addition and subtraction facts to 10. Get a jumpstart on first grade through hands-on activities and math games on the Smartboard.

Students will use several fairytale stories to build their writing skills.  Sentence structure, handwriting basics, sequencing and daily grammar activities will be included.
Cursive Writing 3-5
Students will learn to shape alphabet letters legibly with appropriate spacing. Students will connect letters to words and then form full sentences. The class will enjoy practicing on white boards with dry erase markers (provided) . They will practice on worksheets and then lined paper. Kids will develop their own creative style of penmanship. Will you have the next most famous signature autograph?

Reading Review
Students will practice reading comprehension strategies, as well as brush up on reading fluency through oral language experiences, short stories, and creative projects.  Using a variety of texts, students will be exposed to tools that will help increase their confidence and reading skills.  This class is designed so every level of reader will improve their present level of skills.

Summer Reading 6 - A Long Way from Chicago
Come and join us as we take a journey of discovery in the endearing novel A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck.  Set during the era of the Great Depression, this novel which contains seven short stories will be discussed using a literature circle format.   We will explore the setting from a historical perspective, and delve into the story vocabulary, character development, literary devices, and themes.   Students will be able to choose from a variety of fun and engaging culminating projects to demonstrate their new knowledge.

Jane Schaffer Writing 7
This course will be designed to help students master the art of writing literary analyses using the Jane Schaffer writing method.   The small class size is a perfect opportunity for students to work collaboratively with peers and interactive with the text.  Students will be reading short stories, discussing them in class, and writing essays in response to the readings.  We will be using the Holt Literature and Language Arts book as well as the Holt Interactive Reader for reading and analysis.
