Summer School News!
Summer School registration packets are due back to the school
by May 27th.

Check out the A - Zs on Summer School in our brochure located on the Serra Web under Academics > Summer School.  We will have classes from ART to SUMMER READING (okay, so we don't make it to Z) instructed by our wonderful Serra teachers.  Here are some detailed highlights of just a few of our offered courses:

Study Skills (6-8):
This course is designed to promote, model, and have students practice and learn a variety of skills and strategies in order to be successful in middle school.  For example, organizational skills will focus on classroom guidelines, the utilization of a homework planner, homework preparation and completion, and how to organize a paper. Learning strategies such as active reading, note taking, and proofreading will provide students with good habits that can be readily applied in classroom settings.  Textbook reference skills will be emphasized in order for students to be self-advocates and assertive learners.  Finally preparation for tests and test-taking skills will help to meet the students' need for learning achievement and success.

Grammar/Jane Schaffer Writing 7:
This course will be designed to help students master the art of writing literary analyses using the Jane Schaffer writing method.   The small class size is a perfect opportunity for students to work collaboratively with peers and interactive with the text.  Students will be reading short stories, discussing them in class, and writing essays in response to the readings.  We will be using the Holt Literature and Language Arts book as well as the Holt Interactive Reader for reading and analysis.

Summer Reading 5: Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
Calling all seafaring sailors! Learn the nautical terms of the time while reading about sailing in the early years of our nation. Students will read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch using literature circle strategies, teacher read-aloud and vocabulary building skills while studying the plot of the novel. This novel is key to the 5th grade overnight adventure to be held during the school year.

Summer Reading 4: The Tale of Despereaux
Together we will be focusing on one of the novels chosen by the 4th Grade Teachers. We will complete the novel over this two week period. Each day will be filled with an interactive, skill building, and literary adventure. The goal of the class is to assist in reinforcing 3rd grade skills while introducing new 4th grade content. The novel will need to be purchased for participation in the class.

Keyboarding and Technology Skills 3-5:
Utilize your computer skills to improve the quality of your school work. Sharpen your keyboarding skills using a self-paced program, and explore Kid Pix, and the programs of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Publisher. You will become more familiar with computer software programs while practicing computer skills in a relaxed, hands-on atmosphere.

Math K-Let's Bloom into Kindergarten:
Students will be introduced to letters and sounds, match partner letters, and blend consonant-vowel-consonant patterns. Fine motor skills will be practiced through a variety of activities such as exercises to build fine motor development, printing name, letters and copying words.

So don't delay - send in your registration packets to secure your spot in our Summer "fun-filled" School!
