A Message from the Principal:
Welcome to a new school year. It takes a TEAM to educate a Serra Student.

A very big thank you for all the kind words, the wonderful e-mails, the well thought out suggestions and prayers during our Grand Opening and the first days of school. I am aware that we have had many changes, adjustments and improvements which require all of us to be patient and calm.

As parents you have been the best-you are each such wonderful role models for your children and truly such a gift to me in my ministry here at Serra. I cannot express to you enough how truly grateful I am.

Traffic was better today
Look for a global e-mail next week for the finalized procedures we are currently trying out.

Back-to-School Nights are all Next Week
I look forward to sharing so much information with you at Back-to-School nights. The teachers are well prepared and excited.

New Website
As you will see today, we are beginning the launch of our new website. Over the next few weeks we will be working through some details. Please follow the links below and we continue to work towards our goal of "going green".

First Mass in our Student Activity Center
Friday, September 18th at 9:15 a.m.
I truly hope you can join us. Attire for the students is Formal Uniform including sweaters, as the Student Activity Center is air-conditioned. If your sweater has not arrived we do understand for the month of September.

Please note that we have received an exemption from the neighborhood parking permit program for the 18th from the City of Rancho Santa Margarita. If you will be attending Mass, please fill all parking spots on campus first before proceeding into the neighborhood.

Library Book Donations
Thank you to the families who have so generously donated their gently used books for our library. However, as we continue to set-up in the new buildings, we are not yet prepared to accept any books. Please watch for more information on when we will be able to accept book donations.

Student Store News
The Student Store is open to students, parents and staff at Serra for the purchase of P.E. uniforms, sweatshirts/sweatpants, Serra items and school supplies, including required reading novels. Required reading novels from past years are on sale for $2.00 each!  The Student Store is now located in the new Middle Education Building (MEB) on the first floor of the C-3 Administration wing across from the Reception Area. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., and Tuesday afternoons from 1:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Please note that students must wear the Serra P.E. uniform on their scheduled P.E. days. The P.E. Uniform (shorts and t-shirt) is available for purchase in the Student Store. For your convenience, a Student Store PREPAID Order Form may be submitted to the School Office with a check attached made payable to Serra Catholic School.  Items ordered will be sent home through your child's homeroom within two to three days, pending the availability of items.  Additional order forms are located on the wall racks in the School Office, or may be downloaded from the Serra website at www.serraschool.org.

Monogramming orders are being delivered to the students' classrooms beginning this week. You will be contacted if there is a delay with your order. Thank you for your patience during these busy first weeks of school.

The Snack Bar is now located at the new MEB window during morning and lunch recesses. Volunteers help serve the students and sell various snacks, water, juice, and various sports drinks.  Items range in price from $.25 to $.75 per item.  NO SODA will be sold to students.  Although we are striving to provide a wider variety of snacks, we ask that you please do not depend upon the Snack Bar for your child's main source of food for the day.

If you have any questions regarding the Student Store or Snack Bar, please contact Catherine Tirado, Student Store/Snack Bar Coordinator, at 888-1990, ext. 122.
Santa Margarita Catholic High School
to hold Anti-Bullying Parent Seminar
This will be one of the most important parent seminars ever presented at SMCHS and we strongly encourage your attendance.
Earlier on September 23rd, your son/daughter will have attended a two hour anti-bullying presentation by the same speaker, Jodee Blanco, who will be addressing parents in the evening.
At the parent seminar, our speaker will share with you the various types of bullying that occur on school campus, the types of students who are bullied and those who bully along with the warning signs when a student is being bullied. In turn, the seminar will give you strategies that will assist you in dealing with a bullying situation as well as how to work with the school in those situations. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the seminar.  CLICK HERE for more information.

Volunteering Requirements

Thank you to all of our parents who have volunteered to work in a various programs and events throughout the school.  We would like to remind you that the Diocese of Orange does require that all volunteers 1) have fingerprint clearance and 2) also complete Safe Environment training.  Both requirements must be fulfilled before the Diocese will permit volunteering with children.   Once you have been fingerprinted, you must complete the Safe Environment training within one week of being fingerprinted.

The Diocese regularly reviews our volunteer list and keeps in contact with us regarding volunteer's status.  No one will be permitted to volunteer with the children without meeting both the fingerprinting and the Safe Environment training requirements.

If you still need to be fingerprinted, please pick up a fingerprinting packet from either the School Office.  An "Applicant Information for Livescan" form must be completed before your actual Livescan form will be issued.  Fingerprinting services are now held at Santa Margarita Catholic High School every Friday from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.  No appointments are necessary, but you must bring the form that you obtain from Serra.

Safe Environment training can be completed online at www.shieldthevulnerable.org.

If you have any questions or would like to check on your status, please email Anna Merrill at amerrill@serraschool.org.

The Binders for recording your Volunteer Service Hours are located in the School Office.  Please remember to take a few moments and record any hours that you have performed over the summer.  Also note, if you registered for the EFT transfer for tuition in time to receive the 10 hour incentive, it is already recorded on your family's card.
Also note:  All volunteers must complete their fingerprinting paperwork BEFORE they are permitted to volunteer at school.  Don't wait!  The deadline to complete this if you plan to work at Harvest Festival is September 30th.  If you need help with this process, please contact Anna Merrill at extension 168.
