Shamanism Wednesday & Springtime Offerings

March 13, 2012

Greetings!

If you live in the New York City area, you are in luck. This Spring you can join us to learn about Shamanism, participate in our ever expanding Passover Seder, learn about the meaning of liberation in mystical Judaism, and come over to shake off your worries in a Bollywood night extravaganza. That is if you RSVP for each of these events!  So, we suggest run and bring a friend, a lover, or a family member and dive together into these NYC experiences!

If you don't live in the New York City area, you are in luck too. This Spring we have started a Faith House video channel with our Living Room hosts and interfaith friends. Over the next six months, we want to make a concerted effort to serve the larger Faith House community around the country and the world. Our growing Twitter account (with 1,000 followers!) is getting more active as Bowie, Frankie, and Samir contribute updates, resources, etc.  We also want to learn from you, so join the online conversations!

The world is getting more religiously complicated, from acts of violence, to legislation, to presidential politics. Now, more than ever since we started Faith House, experiencing other people's faith to deepen our own and make the world a better place is becoming a foundational religious practice and critical for out future together. That's why we are here and that's why you are where you are.

Together,

Samir Selmanovic

Join us for this joyful, hands-on introduction to shamanism, the oldest form of healing on Earth. Shamanism is a path of direct revelation - requiring no outside authorities or beliefs. Through the shamanic journey, a universal practice of shaman throughout the world, you will learn to tap Divine realms of the spirit world accessible to all. Dive into an inexhaustible wellspring of healing, guidance, and insight to deal with the everyday struggles of life.

There has never been a time in human history when shamanism was not practiced.  It is an ancient and ever-evolving spiritual practice with worlds of wisdom enough to help us through the 21 century. The evening will include shamanic drumming, singing, and journeying into spirit world.

Stephanie Alston-Nero, artist-performing poet-healer, has a private healing practicing in Harlem. She has written two books of poetry, Kiss Me On My Face of God and In Wild Violet Shrine.  She is a faculty member of International Women's Writing Guild, where she has taught at annual conferences at Yale, Brown, and Skidmore College for nearly a decade.  As a shamanic activist, she facilitates Healing History Workshop:  Transforming the Wounds of Social Oppression. This unprecedented spiritual-educational workshop is designed to help release the wounds of slavery, racism and oppression for people of all races, blending the wisdom of the arts, contemplations on history, and shamanic practices to cleanse the soul of oppression. In her private practice, Stephanie specializes in chronic pain and emotional suffering, ancestral healing, and the healing of artists. Malidoma Patrice Somé, Ph.D. (author, Of Water and the Spirit, Initiations of an African Shaman) says:  "Stephanie is a descendant of shamanic power. She is healing the past to stabilize the present and future with more light."   www.Healing-History.com

Join us as we explore various medieval and early modern Jewish mystical teachings on the festival of Passover.

*How do the kabbalists understand the relationship between spiritual and physical liberation?

*What do they believe is the relationship between the human being and the Divine in these processes?

*How are classical figures like Moses and Pharaoh treated by the mystics?

This session is intended as both an introduction to Jewish mystical thought and as an opportunity for reflection on the values of freedom, personal and communal responsibility, and religious pluralism.

Rabbi Or N. Rose is the Director of the Center for Global Judaism at Hebrew College (HC) in Boston. He also serves as Co-Director of CIRCLE: The Center for Inter-Religious &Communal Leadership Education, a joint venture of HC and Andover Newton Theological School.
