December 26, 2011
|
Greetings!
Happy Chanukah! Merry Christmas! As you return to work, relax with your family, or travel back home today, make sure to check out the Religion page on the Huffington Post. Faith House is the top story! Samir Selmanovic and Bowie Snodgrass put together an article incorporating a slideshow of images by Sean McGinn and reflections from people in the Faith House community called "Faith House Manhattan Tour Bus: Experience Your Neighbor's Faith to Deepen Your Own." Look below for full reflections from Chris Fici, Jaime Kraft, Frank Fredericks, and Nate Herpich about each of the stops on our Tour. Download our GIFT to all of you -- a cookbook with stories and recipes from our community. And listen to our 3-part song for peace; we'll email the sheet music and MP3 to everyone who supports Faith House with a gift of at least $50 by December 31. As we come to the end of 2011, please support Faith House so we can continue to create ways for people in New York and around the world to experience our neighbor's faith and deepen our own in 2012. First time donor? Your gift of $10, $25 or $50 will support the work we do year-round and the vision we share. Already a donor? Consider making a "repeat donation" online or emailing a pledge for 2012 to support@faithhousemanhattan.org. $15, $25, $50 or $100 per month will help us budget and is the best way you can support us.

The Thread Underneath the Pearls: Final Reflections on the Tour Bus
by Chris Fici
As I was soaking up the whirling sanctity at our wonderful Bus Tour event at the Dergah of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order, the pain of my own disconnection in my own practice became manifest, and that void was quickly filled by the wonderful and mystical people I saw around me, deeply absorbed in the love and vision of the Divine. I came to realize that what they were experiencing was something I had access to every day, if I chose to. I saw very clearly how we were all pearls on the same thread of God's mercy. I returned to my own community and practice with a sense of renewal that has stayed with me ever since. Read full post

Twice Told Tales: Telling the Story Differently at Riverside
by Jaime Kraft
Rev. Stephen Phelps, Interim Senior Minister at the Riverside Church, shared a belief of his that I personally had never before heard spoken plainly aloud by any Christian, let alone from the pulpit: in his opinion, the stories told by all other religions are equally as valid as the stories told by the Christian Bible - they're just telling The Story a bit differently. The Reverend's honesty and courage to express this belief openly before his congregation, and their overwhelmingly positive reaction to it, touched me and bolstered my sense of hope. Read full post
Stop #3 - Kabbalat Shabbat Service and Potluck With Rabbi David Ingber, Shir Yaakov Feinstein Feit, and Romemu Challah Communion: Romemu Shabbat Reflection by Frank Fredericks
I began to take in the music, which was different than any Shabbat service I've been to. As an evangelical Christian, that's not many. First, I noticed that there were instruments playing to support the singing; a cajón, piano, and a Spanish-style guitar. In this long hall marked by stark white brick walls, green banners decorated with gold Arabic letters, and an austere, but majestic, wooden mihrab, I felt transported into a space where I could be sheltered from the world outside. Here, for several hours and for the first time in quite awhile, I believed myself able to listen deeply. Read full post
Stop #1 - Hindu Kirtan Community Service With Gadadhara Pandit Dasa, Bhakti Center Monks, & Congregation
The Bhakti Center Welcomes Faith House as Tour Bus Begins by Chris Fici
The gathering was made more unique by the fact that it was one of the first times we were hosting guests in our beautiful new temple space, which had just been blessed and inaugurated the prior weekend. The gorgeous new hand-carved wooden altar from India, along with the natural mud-and-clay designs of the temple walls created a unique atmosphere, a veritable oasis of the simple yet profound devotion of Indian village life in the middle of Manhattan.
