Header: Experience Your Neighbor's Faith
Faith and Food
March 23, 2011
Greetings!

Half of our Living Rooms this season have a common theme of faith and food. And this Wednesday is no exception. Join us tonight as community members share their significant recipes and stories (with samples!) at "More to Food than Feeding" with Samir Selmanovic.

Can't make it or want to take the evening with you? You're in luck! Faith House is now soliciting submissions for our very first cookbook in honor of this season's theme. Submit your favorite recipes and the stories of their significance by April 30th. Find out more below.

And if your thought our upcoming line-up couldn't be more foodie, think again. Join us on April 17 for our 3rd Annual Interfaith Seder at the Church of St. Francis Xavier with Rabbi David Ingber! More details below, including how to fulfill the required RSVP by email.

With the first day of spring at the beginning of this week, we're looking forward to sharing this new season with you while exploring more about what sustains every body and soul.

More to Food than Feeding

Croatia Cooking

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Rescheduled from 1/12 Snow Cancellation

6 pm Doors, 7 pm Program

 Intersections, 274 5th Ave

 Btwn 29th and 30th Sts

With Samir Selmanovic
& Marcia Kelly

Food has an important role in every religion. It connects us with God, the earth, our bodies, and each other. Cooking integrates the five senses. Eating stands at the connecting point of science, art, and economy.

Yet, we are part of the culture that promotes feeding instead of having a meal. Come and slow down with us.  There will be no lectures. Our founder Samir Selmanovic will share his experience of growing up in a Croatian atheist family where the sacred was communicated through food. Come for stories, tasting, and friends. We will also hear food blessings from different religious traditions as included in 100 Graces: Mealtime Blessings, by Marcia and Jack Kelly, friends of Faith House Manhattan.

Here at Faith House, we have an exciting new offering in the works and would love for YOU to be a part of it!

We are planning to distribute a brand new offering, "Faith and Food: The Cookbook"! It will be a free download-able compilation of recipe submissions that are complimented with personal stories and/or pictures with captions to give the foods an added layer of flavor and meaning. As many of you know, a running theme throughout this Living Room season is food and sustenance in different faith traditions, making it the perfect time to create a keepsake for all of you to have and use for years to come.

Please send submissions to info@faithhousemanhattan.org and be sure to include:
  1. A recipe for a dish that is significant to you with specific measurements and the number of servings included.
  2. A personal and/or faith-based story that gives this dish its meaning
  3. Optionally add a picture with a caption, illuminating how it relates to the dish
  4. Your full name and most used email address
Submissions due by April 30th.

Why do women have a natural affinity to congregate? What is it that draws us together? We know it is happening... in our communities of faith, over our stoves and microwaves, in our emails and blogs! We know it is happening...at board meetings and neighborhood demonstrations, over skype and chai lattes!

We, Jill Minkoff and Ashley Curl, ask you to consider what it would be like to intentionally gather as women of multiple paths converging to share and grow spiritual, inspirational, and devotional space together.

As you consider, we warmly welcome you to join us in exploring the depths of common meal, ritual, experiential learning, and community, as we seek and nurture together an emerging collective of women of "many faiths and none" in New York City within the embrace of Faith House Manhattan.

To begin this journey, we will meet from 3-6 PM on Saturdays April 2nd, and June 4th. Space will be limited, as we will be meeting in homes. Please RSVP your ability to attend and interest to Jill@faithhousemanhattan.org.

In the name of that which connects us

and that which makes us diverse,

Ashley and Jill
