Party Today, Ashes Tomorrow March 8, 2011
|
Greetings! Today is Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Carnival, Shrove Tuesday - the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Today is a day for many Christians to be festive before entering into a 40-day period of discipline and fasting (watch video below for more).
 | | Father Matthew Presents "Lent and Shrove Tuesday" | If you have ever wondered why one day each year people show up on the subway with ash crosses on their forehead - or if you are looking for a place to get some - come to our Ash Wednesday Living Room tomorrow, March 9, with Transmission, an emerging house church community co-founded by Bowie in 2006. Join us for soap-making, yoga, scripture, Tazie chants, and more.
Read on to see what else is coming up at Faith House this Spring, including "More to Food than Feeding" with Samir Selmanovic, the second Women's Spirituality Circle, the third annual Interfaith Seder with Rabbi David Ingber, and in June, the first Wild Goose Festival.
Finally, THANK YOU to our 2010 Donors, who keep the Faith House community and adventure, going and growing!

LIVING ROOM GATHERING Dust in the Wind: Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Season
Wednesday, March 9, 2011 6 pm Doors, 7 pm Program Intersections 274 5th Ave Btwn 29th and 30th Sts With Transmission Every year around this time, there comes a Wednesday when you've probably noticed a marked difference among the people you pass on the street. Women, men, and children are marked with a cross made of ash on their forehead, including perhaps people you've never before seen showing signs of their religiosity. For many Christians, getting ashes on "Ash Wednesday" is one of the most important rites of the year. Ash Wednesday also marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and deep prayer that ends with the remembrance of Jesus' death and the celebration of his resurrection on Easter Sunday. In this Living Room, led by the emergent church group Transmission, we will dip our toes into the mysteries of mortality, sacrifice, and cleansing that are integral to Ash Wednesday and Lent. Through a series of activities including soap-making, yoga poses, Taize chanting, scriptural reading, and conversations, we'll look at what Lent can offer both Christians and non-Christians alike on their spiritual journey. Transmission is an emergent house church made up mostly of New Yorkers in their twenties and thirties. It attracts both the "churched," some of whom have gone to seminary and now work for churches, as well as those who are attracted to Christian spirituality but do not feel fed (or comfortable) in traditional churches. Transmission is very interested in the relationship between worship and community, as well as the relationship between innovation and tradition, seeking to craft new ritual and liturgical exploration while remaining in continuity with the larger Christian tradition. Transmission was founded in 2006 by Isaac Everett and Bowie Snodgrass, who met at on Ash Wednesday 2004.

LIVING ROOM GATHERING More to Food than Feeding
Wednesday, March 23, 2011 Rescheduled from 1/12 Snow Cancellation
6 pm Doors, 7 pm Program Intersections, 274 5th Ave Btwn 29th and 30th Sts
With Samir Selmanovic & Marcia Kelly
Food has an important role in every religion. It connects us with God, the earth, our bodies, and each other. Cooking integrates the five senses. Eating stands at the connecting point of science, art, and economy.
Yet, we are part of the culture that promotes feeding instead of having a meal. Come and slow down with us. There will be no lectures. Our founder Samir Selmanovic will share his experience of growing up in a Croatian atheist family where the sacred was communicated through food. Come for stories, tasting, and friends. We will also hear food blessings from different religious traditions as included in 100 Graces: Mealtime Blessings, by Marcia and Jack Kelly, friends of Faith House Manhattan.

NEW FAITH HOUSE OFFERING Women's Spirituality Circles
Saturdays in 2011 April 2 & June 4
3-6 pm
Gathering at homes in Manhattan and Brooklyn
RSVP to Jill@faithhousemanhattan.org to attend or learn more Why do women have a natural affinity to congregate? What is it that draws us together? We know it is happening... in our communities of faith, over our stoves and microwaves, in our emails and blogs! We know it is happening...at board meetings and neighborhood demonstrations, over skype and chai lattes! We, Jill Minkoff and Ashley Curl, ask you to consider what it would be like to intentionally gather as women of multiple paths converging to share and grow spiritual, inspirational, and devotional space together. As you consider, we warmly welcome you to join us in exploring the depths of common meal, ritual, experiential learning, and community, as we seek and nurture together an emerging collective of women of "many faiths and none" in New York City within the embrace of Faith House Manhattan. To begin this journey, we will meet from 3-6 PM on Saturdays February 5th, April 2nd, and June 4th. Space will be limited, as we will be meeting in homes. Please RSVP your ability to attend and interest to Jill@faithhousemanhattan.org.
In the name of that which connects us and that which makes us diverse, Ashley and Jill |

The Negro Speaks
of Rivers
By Langston Hughes
|
I've known rivers:
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the
flow of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy
bosom turn all golden in the sunset.
I've known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
Read all the Sabbath Poems in our series from the book "Earth Prayers," a collection of daily earth honoring poems and prayers.
