Header: Experience Your Neighbor's Faith
Light Up the Nights
November 9, 2010
Greetings!

We're sure many of you enjoyed your extra hour this past Sunday, but we also all know that it signals the beginning of darker days.

Bring some light into your evenings with our Living Room this Wednesday experiencing the heart of Islam and on Dec. 8 crafting light-catching sacred objects amongst friends, music, and food.

Then on Dec.10 we are going on a private tour of the beautiful Three Faiths exhibit at the New York Public Library. Don't miss witnessing illumination over the ages; be sure to  find out how to fulfill the required RSVP to below.

And in anticipation of days with more light altogether, there are two days left to catch the early bird special for the national Wild Goose Festival in June, where our very own Samir Selmanovic and Bowie Snodgrass will be planning the Interfaith Programming.

Finally, for another way to brighten your evenings, those of you who would like to get more involved in Faith House and participate in a wonderfully dynamic, close-knit core group of volunteers who share dinner and discussion every third Thursday, please email Faigy and see the sidebar to find out more.

Interbeing: Experience the heart of Islam

Sufi Nur Ashki  Wednesday,
November 10, 2010

6 pm Doors, 7 pm Program

 Intersections, 274 5th Ave
 Btwn 29th and 30th Sts

With Khabir John McGeehan, Juliet Rabia Gentile, Mujadid Shah and the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order

"Whatever I say, You are the subject.
Wherever I go, every impulse is toward You."
~Yunus Emre

Sufism or tassawuf is mostly identified today with the figure of the whirling dervish and the poetry of Rumi. It is a path to Reality. Tonight dervishes of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order invite you to experience the sacred tradition of dhikrullah, or the remembrance of Allah. "Remember Me and I will remember you." (Hadith)

"Nobody son of nobody" (quoting Abd'ul Khayr) Khabir John McGeehan is a dervish of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order and is grateful for the blessing of Shaykha Fariha. The Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order is a community of dervishes within the Halveti-Jerrahi Tariqat, in the specific lineage and spirit of Shaykh Muzaffer Ashki al-Jerrahi, Shaykh Nur al-Jerrahi, and Shaykha Fariha al-Jerrahi. They are based at Dergah al-Farah in NYC, with various circles throughout the U.S. and Mexico. They joyfully welcome seekers and students of all religious and non-religious paths into our gatherings.

RSVPs welcome, but not required, on Facebook and MeetUp.

Light, Color & the Sacred: Holiday Craft Night

Wednesday,
November 10, 2010

6 pm Doors, 7 pm Program

 Intersections, 274 5th Ave
 Btwn 29th and 30th Sts

With Andy Padre,
the Metrocard Man

During the busy holiday season, come to a light evening with fun, music, food and crafts led by Andy Padre, the Metrocard Man. Hear stories from people of different faiths about the beautiful sacred objects they are crafting. And of course, enjoy the hands-on craft you can hang in your window to capture the beauty of light in these short, dark days. With wax paper, crayons, and some heat we will make representations of various sacred objects that act much like stained-glass ornaments.

Andy Padre was raised in Seattle, WA and attended the Advertising Art program at Seattle Central Community College. In 1996 he moved to New York to study at the Art Students League where he took classes in portraiture and still life and worked in a variety of mediums. In the summer of 2006 Andy was unemployed and nearing the end of a stressful co-op purchase when he discovered Metrocards, a bright, cheerful and cheap medium. He first covered his bike in Metrocards which was well received by the public and frequently commented on and photographed. Andy now regularly participates in the Halloween, Easter, and Mermaid Day Parades in New York and recently completed his 10th parade, the 2010 Halloween Parade. Metrocard parade costume themes include: a 22 person Metrocard Wedding, the Wizard of Oz, and the Village People's Y.M.T.A. Andy's creations have been featured in the New York Times, New York Post, AM New York, NY Daily News, and the Huffington Post.

RSVPs welcome, but not required, on Facebook and MeetUp.

Field Trip
Private Tour of the Three Faiths Exhibit

  Sunday, December 12, 2010

 Meeting at 2:45pm

NY Public Library: Stephen A. Schwarzman Building
 5th Ave and 42nd Street

Join us on a private tour of the beautiful Three Faiths exhibit at the New York Public Library!

We will be meeting on Sunday December 12, 2010 at 2:45pm at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street). The tour will last for 45 minutes to an hour, followed by a fun, relaxed dinner and discussion.

RSVP is required and the cost is $7 per person, $5 for seniors, and free for full-time students with their ID. Please email Faigy with your RSVP and how many people will be joining you, with the subject line "Three Faiths RSVP."

Don't miss what the New York Times calls "stunning" and vividly describes as such: "It stretches from a Bible found in a monastery in coastal Brittany that was sacked by the Vikings in the year 917, to a 1904 lithograph showing the original Temple Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue. It encompasses both an elaborately decorated book of 20th-century Coptic Christian readings and a modest 19th-century printing of the Gospels in the African language Grebo. There are Korans, with pages that shimmer with gold leaf and elegant calligraphy, and a 13th-century Pentateuch from Jerusalem, written in script used by Samaritans who traced their origins to the ancient Northern Kingdom of Israel."

See this event on Facebook and MeetUp as well.
