Summer News & Fall Events
|
Greetings!
In the waning city heat, we're excitedly planning our fall programs! Our third year will begin with Faith House partnering with GreenFaith, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and 350.org to present SUSTAIN: An Interfaith Evening for the Climate with Bill McKibben at St. John the Divine on Saturday, September 18th. Read more below and in the coming weeks!
Mark your calendars. We now have dates for our Fall 2010 Living Room gatherings and are busy confirming an amazing season of guest hosts and topics. In preparation for the fall, the Kitchen Table group of volunteers will gather next Wednesday, August 18, to re-connect, coordinate responsibilities for the September, and watch a movie.
Bowie Snodgrass is now one month from her due date (September 11th) and has been preparing Faith House for her maternity leave all year. Samir Selmanovic will serve as interim Executive Director during her leave this fall and Faigy is quickly learning the ropes to pick up the slack! This is a wonderful opportunity for the Faith House community to come together as a team. Our Kitchen Table, Board of Directors and program leaders are increasing their shared leadership. We are greatly looking forward to the unique ways you will add to our community in the coming months. Contact us to get more involved.
Finally, Ramadan Kareem! to all our
Muslim brothers and sisters who are spiritually on the move,
contemplating compassion and gratitude in this holy month of Ramadan.

CALLING NYC VOLUNTEERS Kitchen Table Movie Night
Wednesday, August 18
6 - 9 PM
Samir Selmanovic's Apartment We'll send address when you RSVP
Faith House's "Kitchen Table" gathers monthly and is "a conversation and coordinating hub for those dedicated to the support and process of Faith House." This month, we're gathering to coordinate volunteers for our September events, share a potluck meal, and watch a movie. David and Moez picked "The Pursuit of Happyness" and to go along with the movie, the potluck theme is Californian food.
RSVP with any questions or let us know you want to come and what you'll bring (salad, dish, dessert, beverage, other). Seating is limited in Samir's apartment... so rsvp ASAP.
This is why David and Moez picked this movie in their own words:
"The Pursuit of Happyness" presents the story of a struggling man named Chris Gardner (played by Will Smith), and the challenges that he faces in an increasingly unstable economic climate. This can especially resonate with people who are facing hardship and uncertainty today. The film also expresses the need to take risks, and how essential education is to achieve one's dreams and goals. I recall a quote, "To try is to risk failure. But risk must be taken because the greatest hazard of life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, live, and love."
In a larger scope, this film will show us to never give up when confronted with problems or setbacks. It is no easy task to show in the post 9/11 world how a religion like Islam can promote peace and understanding unless interfaith institutions like ours come together to build bridges and promote the development where Islam and other faiths can routinely be associated with pluralism. The vision of Samir Selmanovic, the founder of Faith House Manhattan, is to help facilitate mutual religious understanding and cooperation through "experiencing the other." The following advice from the film is necessary in pursuing this challenging course of action: "Don't ever let anyone tell you you can't do something...You got a dream, you gotta protect it...If you want something, go get it."

SUSTAIN will gather ordained and lay leaders from diverse religious traditions, environmental leaders and concerned citizens for reflection, inspiration and a call to action related to climate change. SUSTAIN's centerpiece will be a 45-minute address by world famous author and activist Bill McKibben, who will focus on the relationship between spirituality, climate change, social justice and sustainability. The event will take place at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, one of the world's pre-eminent settings for religiously-based environmental action. The event's partners - GreenFaith, Faith House, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and 350.org - invite you to join us in making this event successful. Find out more about sponsorships for organizations and individuals. Please spread the word! Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and Eaarth, is an American
environmentalist and writer who frequently writes about global warming and
alternative energy and advocates for more localized economies. In 2010 the
Boston Globe called him "probably the nation's leading
environmentalist" and Time magazine described him as "the world's
best green journalist. In 2009 he led the organization of 350.org , which coordinated what Foreign Policy
magazine called "the largest ever global coordinated rally of any kind,"
with 5,200 simultaneous demonstrations in 181 countries. The magazine named him
to its inaugural list of the 100 most important global thinkers, and MSN named
him one of the dozen most influential men of 2009. Find out more on the event webpage or join our Facebook event |
