Song of Songs: A Ritualized Reading of the Sexiest Book in the Bible

On Saturday evening (June 13, 2009) the Faith House Living Room gathering was focused around an exquisite little treasure of literature integral to Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and all people who love Love. Check out the pics. Over the years, our director Bowie Snodgrass has become an expert in this piece of literature and has developed an amazingly simple way to experience the seductiveness of God. Here is the outline that she has created and we utilized, which includes the entire text of the book. I hope you will catch another opportunity to hear Bowie leading this ritual. The second best would be to do it yourself in your synagogue, church, mosque, local library, or with friends! The story of the Universe is a love story and your own experiences of love with people around you (your lovers, friends, children, parents, neighbors) are all retelling that story of the Universe. To the intoxication! (~ Samir Selmanovic)

OUR REGULAR PROGRAM

LIVING ROOM gatherings are every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 5:00-6:30 pm in Intersections located at 274 Fifth Ave (btw. 29th and 30th Street).

At least once a month we SERVE TOGETHER in the area of fighting poverty, working for social or environmental justice, sustainability, and community service. We also have a FAITH HOUSE TOUR BUS program, as we step out of our comfort zones and into a hospitable space of others to visit, participate, and learn from their services, lectures, rituals, concerts, and other events.

Laughter and Tears: The Ecstasy and Agony of Birth

laughterJoin Rabbi David Ingber and members of Romemu for an end of Shabbat, Havdalah service focused on "birth" in the Jewish traditions and in our own lives.  Rabbi David will share scripture, rabbinic and hassidic stories about birth, his own journey of preparing for the birth of his first-born child this summer, and invite us to share our stories.  Through song, stories and the havdaah elements, we will remember tears of longing, ways of praying and breathing to soften the birthpangs, and the raw laughter and love that God brings forth in the ecstasy of creating new life.

Romemu Shabbat Services & Friday Night Veggie Potluck

romemuWest End Presbyterian Church
165 West 105th Street at Amsterdam Avenue

We are all invited to join Rabbi David and Romemu (roh·meh·moo) for their shabbat services.  "Committed to powerful prayer and transformative spiritual practices, Romemu attempts to engage the heart, mind and body in everything we do, helping us to foster greater levels of compassion."  Those of us who have gone in the past have been deeply moved and inspired by the Romemu services.

Then stay for dinner!  * Please bring a dish or drinks to serve 4 - 6 hearty portions. Cous cous, salads, and pastas are all great examples.

Potluck Kashrut: In order to ensure that everyone can contribute and eat at Romemu potlucks, we ask that all food adhere to either: (1) Vegetarian, with only vegetarian ingredients. (Fish with fins and scales is also ok as long as it is labeled or self-evident.) OR (2) Still vegetarian (plus fish, as above), and all ingredients are marked with a recognized kosher symbol (more than just "K"), cooked (if applicable) in a kosher kitchen that uses only hechshered products.
