UPCOMING LIVING ROOM GATHERINGS
(location: Intersections, 274 Fifth Ave, between 29th and 30th)

Happy Earth's Day everyone!  We are elated to announce our next Living Room gathering. We will celebrate the fact that we live together on this one beautiful planet. Isn't she amazing!

April 25, Sat 5 pm

Moonwalk: A Mythological Perspective (Note from Samir: If you have to miss a Living Room event this Spring, it should not be this one!)

Guest Speaker: Phil Robinson

With a mischevious glint in his eye, famed mythologist Joseph Campbell
(1904-1987) would often define mythology as "other people's religion."

In addition to his groundbreaking work in comparative mythology, Campbell also served as president of the American Society for the Study of Religion, and did much throughout his life to cultivate inter-faith dialogue between multiple religious communities.  He felt that by
'unwrapping' the specific symbols of each other's wisdom traditions, we
could gain insight into the core of universal human truths which are
relevant to each of us.

'Earthrise,' the 1968 photograph taken of Earth from the moon during the
Apollo 8 mission, was believed by Campbell to be the most significant
mythological image to come into our collective consciousness in modern
times.

In this living room talk, guest facilitator Phil Robinson will offer an
overview of Campbell's major ideas regarding the role of mythology and
religion in our lives, with a special emphasis on Campbell's
interpretation of the taking of the Earthrise photograph as a unifying
spiritual event for all of humaity.

Phil will also recount his personal story of how encountering Campbell's
writings at a young age enabled him to grasp a broader and more
pluralistic view of spirituality than the fundamentalist literal
Christianity that he had been raised with.

Phil Robinson (who will also serve as the night's musical guest) is a
popular singer/songwriter, speaker and community builder active throughout NYC, who often speaks and leads community events around the topics of mythology, creativity and culture.  Phil has been involved with the Joseph Campbell Foundation for a number of years, helping to continue Campbell's work by aiding the foundation in building networks of local community groups based on the exploration of matters of spirituality and culture. Phil is founder of Roomful of Sky, the NY-based creative community, as well as the indie record label Roomful of Sky Records, where he has most recently been working as editor and release producer of the new Collected Lectures of Joseph Campbell.

ORGANIZED BY OUR FRIENDS AT OPEN CENTER

~ by Rabia Gentile (Faith House Manhattan Islamic co-leader)

If you were intrigued or perhaps puzzled about the picture of Jesus in the Islamic tradition painted by Faith House presenter, Mujadid Shah, at our last Living Room Gathering, then please don't miss this chance to study about the "Jesus within" and "Mary within" with pre-eminent Sufi scholar Stephen Hirtenstein this coming Sunday 4/26/09, 10am to 5:30pm at NY Open Center (www.opencenter.org). For more info and registration click HERE.

Drawing upon the writings of the 13th century Sufi masters Ibn 'Arabi and Rumi, Mr. Hirtenstein will elucidate these extraordinary mystics' understanding of such concepts as the virgin birth, of being a "Friend of God," as well as the Quranic view of Jesus and Mary.

I myself have had the pleasure of studying with Mr. Hirtenstein several times and have always come away with a wealth of knowledge and something even more difficult to find, a sense of the lived reality of these teachings. I have been contributing in small ways these past months to help New York Open Center organize this and other ground-breaking events on Sufism, including an upcoming conference entitled, "Islam, Sufism and the Heart of Compassion," on November 6th & 7th, 2009. This Sunday's workshop will be a sneak peak of the exciting things to come in November!

*Stephen Hirtenstein, MA, is the author of The Unlimited Mercifier, a spiritual biography of Ibn 'Arabi, and co-translator of two treatises by Ibn 'Arabi, Divine Sayings and The Seven Days of the Heart. He has been the editor of the Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi Society's Journal since its inception in 1982 and is a co-founder of Anqa Publishing. He lives in Oxford, England.
