CARBOY SIZES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With the discontinuation of the Mexican 6-gallon carboy, we have had several inquiries into the volume of liquid held by the Italian replacement. Based on our calculations, the various 6-gallon carboys contained the following amounts of liquid:
- Better-Bottle - right at 6 gallons (22.5 liters)
- Mexican Carboy - 6 gallons + 1 pint (23 liters)
- Italian Carboy - 6 gallons + 2 pints (23.5 liters)
The increased volume of the Italian carboy will require you to add more wine for topping off or use sanitized glass marbles to displace some of the oxygen. Another approach is to rack down to a 5-gallon carboy and put whatever is left over into smaller vessels like wine bottles and/or 1/2 gallon jugs. As you rack, you can use this "extra" wine to top off the same batch or other similar batches.
I wish I had a better solution, but until someone decides to manufacture another Mexican style 6-gallon carboy, the Better-Bottle and Italian style are all that are available.
As an aside, the Mexican carboy was only used by the home wine making industry. Since it had no other uses, there was just not enough demand to encourage the Mexican glass plants to continue its production. |

REMAINING LIMITED RELEASES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We always order extras of the limited release wine kits for those new to the hobby, for those that want more and for those who missed out on the pre-order. This year was no exception, but we are starting to run out. The Mosti Mondiale Meglioli Amarone was the first to go (which is quite common) and we have less than 5 left in almost every limited release wine kit. If you want to assure yourself of any of these kits, I suggest you order them now as I will not be receiving anymore. |
WineMaker Magazine Conference
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 2nd Annual WineMaker Magazine Conference will be held in Napa Valley, California on May 15-16, 2009. This will give you the opportunity to join fellow winemakers from across North America in the heart of Northern California's wine country for two full days packed with seminars and special events to help you make your own great wine.

- Classes on winemaking techniques, grape growing & more!
- Special social events to trade ideas with fellow winemakers
As with last year, The Wine Maker's Toy Store will be one of the sponsors of this oustanding event. In addition, we will be providing free shirts to all of our customers that are attending. If you would like a free shirt to wear at this event, please send me an email with your size. We will bring the shirts with us and hand them out at the show. In addition, we will have a table set up and if you would like to help at the table, please let me know.

WINES OF THE MONTH

In keeping with prior months, we are going to give 6% off on 2 more wine kit lines. This month the lines are
All of these wine kits are ready to bottle in 6-8 weeks and are ready to drink in another 3-9 months. These wine kits will definitely improve with 6-12 months of additional aging. Remember with all of our "Wines of the Month", we try to anticipate demand, but may not be 100% successful. If we run out of a special, we will advise you of such and an expected ship date. We appreciate your understanding.
