Janis Cooke Newman brings Mary Todd Lincoln to life in Mary
Meet the author at High Tea with Janis Cooke Newman, Sept. 24 at The Creamery

The 2011 Missouri Literary Festival: The Civil War is delighted to announce the availability of tickets to High Tea with Janis Cooke Newman, a special ticketed event to be held 3:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at The Creamery Arts Center. Guests will sit at glittering tables and sip tea from fine china as they fortify themselves with sandwiches and scones, all while listening to the author of Mary discuss her poignant work of historical fiction. While Mary Todd Lincoln's detractors portrayed her as unstable, demanding and self-centered, Newman reveals the complexities of a bright, ambitious, passionate and very misunderstood woman. Beginning in the asylum to which she was commited by her son, Mary shuttles between past and present as Newman brings Mary Todd Lincoln's human experience to the fore. Mary takes us through Lincoln's personal recollections -- from her Kentucky childhood through her marriage, the births and deaths of children, the Civil War, her husband's assassination and beyond. Tickets to High Tea with Janis Cooke Newman are $25 apiece, and only 80 will be sold. Tickets to the tea also provide general admission for all three days of the festival. Tickets may be purchased from any Literary Festival Board member, (listed top right) or contact Board Chairman William Brandon Bowman at (417) 865-0450.

Something About MARY What was the first lady to be dubbed "First Lady" like? Well, it's complicated A Southern Belle The daughter of prominent Kentucky merchant and state senator Robert Smith Todd, Mary was a vivacious belle -- socially graceful, witty and fluent in French. Although raised in a household with slaves, she became a fierce abolitionist. An Educated Woman
Mary's schooling went well beyond the average for a women of her era, and she was an avid student of politics, serving as a trusted political advisor to her husband.
A Tragic Figure
The death of her mother when Mary was only 6 had a profound impact on her. Tragedy would fall upon her again and again with the deaths of three children, her husband's assassination and her battle with her only surviving son over her very freedom.
